Thermostat housing and chain tensioner on the 3.0 V6 twin-turbo (F160)

Sources are not verified in real time and no entry confirms that your car is affected.

Engine / equipment
3.0 V6 twin-turbo petrol (F160): Ghibli, Quattroporte and Levante
Period mentioned
2013 onwards
Symptoms
Coolant smell after hot drives and a slowly dropping level; one to three seconds of chain rattle on a cold start.
Possible cause described
The plastic thermostat housing warps, cracks and seeps. The hydraulic chain tensioners lose pressure when cold; if left, the chain can slap and upset the cam timing. On the Quattroporte the air-suspension compressor also fails (80,000–130,000 km).
Check for the garage
Watch the coolant level and replace the thermostat housing preventively at around 80,000 km; listen on a cold start and check the cam timing if it rattles.
Cost cited in the source
Approx. CAD 900–1,500 for the thermostat housing (Canadian garage).A rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.
