MOT

Cars: the first at 3 years if registered new, then every 2 years and, from 12 years old, every year.
Free, with the car's identity card series (CIV) or the chassis number (VIN).

Besides the ITP, to drive in Romania your car needs a valid rovinietă and RCA insurance.
Rovinietă
It is compulsory to drive on Romania's national roads, also with foreign plates. You pay for days, months or a year, and since 1 October 2026 the price depends on the car's Euro standard.

Every car registered in Romania must have a valid RCA policy while it stays registered, even if it is not driven. It covers the damage you cause to others.
In all three countries the test is mainly about the car's safety and emissions:
