Stretched rear timing chainTiming system
Engine / equipment
N47 2.0 diesel (116d–123d, 316d–325d, 520d, X1/X3 18d-20d)
Period mentioned
2007–2015 (improved from 2011)
Symptoms
Rattling from the rear of the engine (gearbox side) on a cold start, getting worse over time. In extreme cases the engine cuts out while driving.
Possible cause described
The timing chain sits at the rear of the engine; its guides are poorly lubricated and the chain stretches. If it jumps or snaps, the valves hit the pistons and the engine is destroyed.
Check for the garage
Listen with the engine fully cold, ideally with a mechanic's stethoscope on the rear of the block.
Cost cited in the source
Approx. €2,000–4,000 at an independent garage (engine must come out)A rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.

Turbo oil starvation from injector carbonTurbo / injection
Engine / equipment
1.6 HDi DV6 (Peugeot 207/308/3008/Partner, Citroën C3/C4/Berlingo; same engine as the Ford 1.6 TDCi)
Period mentioned
Approx. 2004–2015
Symptoms
Loud turbo whistle, power loss, blue or black smoke, oil that gets dirty very quickly. Before the failure, often a puffing or ticking from the cylinder head and an exhaust smell from an injector.
Possible cause described
The injector clamp bolts work loose, the gas leak forms carbon that gets into the oil and clogs the mesh filter in the banjo bolt feeding the turbo. The turbo is starved of oil. Replacing only the turbo does not fix it.
Check for the garage
Check injector bolt torque and carbon at their base, the turbo banjo bolt and the sump strainer.

1.6 THP chain and tensionerTiming system
Engine / equipment
1.6 THP / VTi (EP6, PSA-BMW “Prince” engine): Peugeot 207/208/308/3008/5008/508/RCZ, Citroën C4/C5/C4 Picasso, DS 3/4/5
Period mentioned
Approx. 2007–2018
Symptoms
Metallic rattle for several seconds after a cold start; engine light for timing deviation.
Possible cause described
The chain stretches and the tensioner is soft. Later units have a revised chain and tensioner, which reduce but do not eliminate the fault.
Check for the garage
Listen to a cold start and check whether the chain was replaced with the revised parts.
Cost cited in the source
Approx. €800–1,500 (converted from dollars)A rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.

B-engine coolant leaks and EGR coolerCooling / EGR
Engine / equipment
B47 and B57 diesel and B48 and B58 petrol modular engines (BMW from 2014–2015 and MINI from 2014)
Period mentioned
2014–2026
Symptoms
Coolant loss with a low-level warning, coolant or oil residue at the rear of the engine; on diesels, internal coolant loss with no visible leak (EGR cooler).
Possible cause described
On the B48 and B58 the water pump leaks (from its weep hole) and the oil filter housing with heat exchanger can crack; on 2017–2021 B58s the crankcase ventilation valve also fails. On the diesels the EGR cooler can leak internally and mix coolant with soot: BMW issued a recall over the risk of the intake manifold catching fire.
Check for the garage
Check the coolant level, look for leaks under the water pump and at the oil filter housing, and on diesels confirm by VIN whether the EGR cooler campaign was done.
Cost cited in the source
Water pump: relatively cheap to replace; oil filter housing: more labour-intensive; EGR cooler: free if covered by the campaignA rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.

Mileage cited in the database: 80,000–195,000 km. This is not a maintenance interval and does not predict a failure.

1.4/1.6 VTi chain and ValvetronicTiming / Valvetronic
Engine / equipment
Naturally aspirated 1.4 and 1.6 VTi from the Prince family (EP3/EP6C), including the MINI One and Cooper 1.4/1.6 (N12/N16)
Period mentioned
2006–2017
Symptoms
Chain rattle on cold starts, unstable idle, stalling and an engine light with variable valve timing codes (P1030, P1062, P101A, P1025).
Possible cause described
The chain stretches and the tensioner fails early, often before 100,000 km. A stretched chain throws the timing out and makes the Valvetronic learning fail, which gets mistaken for a Valvetronic fault.
Check for the garage
Listen to a cold start and check the timing and chain condition before replacing Valvetronic parts or repeating adaptations.
Cost cited in the source

Period mentioned
2020–2021
Symptoms
Usually none before failure. In rare cases, a battery short-circuit with a fire risk, especially while charging.
Possible cause described
During cell production (supplier Samsung) welding debris got into some cells, which can cause a short-circuit. BMW recalled about 26,900 cars worldwide and, until a fix was ready, asked owners not to charge them.
Check for the garage
Confirm by VIN with BMW that the battery recall has been done; if not, do not charge the car until it is checked.

Corrupted FRM3 module (lights and windows)Electrical and electronic systems
Engine / equipment
FRM3 footwell module (lights, indicators and windows): 1 Series E81 to E88, 3 Series E90 to E93, X1 E84, Z4 E89, X5 E70, X6 E71 and E72 and MINI R55 to R61
Period mentioned
2004–2015
Symptoms
After a flat battery, a battery change or disconnection, or a jump start: lights, indicators or windows stop working, side or dipped lights stay on and diagnostics cannot communicate with the module (for example code 00A3C1).
Possible cause described
The module's EEPROM gets corrupted by low or unstable voltage: a flat battery, jump starting, overcharging from a faulty alternator or loose terminals. It is a module software fault, not a wiring fault.
Check for the garage
Check the battery and charging and try communicating with ISTA. If the module does not respond, it can be repaired by rewriting its EEPROM (specialist services or programmers) instead of being replaced, then coded. Use a voltage maintainer when working on the car.
Cost cited in the source
Repair by a specialist service: from about €20–60 plus postage; new module with dealer coding: considerably moreA rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.

Rear axle knocking in cold weather from the rear shock absorbers (MINI F56)Suspension and steering
Engine / equipment
MINI F56 3-door (Cooper and Cooper S) with standard suspension, built up to 14/7/2015
Period mentioned
2014–2015
Symptoms
Hammering from the rear axle area over rough road surfaces in low temperatures; it goes away when it gets warmer.
Possible cause described
The rear shock absorbers make an internal noise in the cold. MINI describes it in its technical bulletin SI M33 01 15, and the fix is to replace both rear shock absorbers.
Check for the garage
Tell the garage it only happens in the cold and over bumps; ask them to check the rear shock absorbers before looking at the engine or the brakes.

Integrated braking system (IBS) that can fail: ABS and DSC out of action and a hard pedalElectrical and electronic systems
Engine / equipment
BMW X1 and iX1 (U11), 2 Series Active Tourer (U06), 5 Series and i5 (G60), 7 Series and i7 (G70), X5, X6, X7, XM; MINI Cooper (F66 and J01) and Countryman (U25)
Period mentioned
2022–2024
Symptoms
The brake warning lights and a screen message come on; the pedal needs more force; ABS and stability control stop working.
Possible cause described
BMW recalled more than a million cars built from June 2022 over a supplier’s integrated braking system (Continental’s MK C2, according to the press): interference in its electronics, or broken welds in its servomotor according to the US recall, can make the pedal harder and leave the car without ABS or DSC. The whole system is replaced in about 3.5 hours (KBA 13586, BMW campaign 0034670200); there were waits of months because of parts shortages.
Check for the garage
Check campaign 0034670200 by VIN at a BMW or MINI dealer; if the brake warning appears, go to the garage straight away.

Crankshaft thrust bearing and carbon on the 1.5 three-cylinder (B38)Engine
Engine / equipment
1.5 three-cylinder B38 (also in the plug-in hybrids): BMW 1 Series, 2 Series Active Tourer, X1, X2 and MINI
Period mentioned
2014 onwards
Symptoms
On early engines with a manual gearbox, crankshaft thrust-bearing damage that can end in serious failure; over the years, loss of power and higher consumption from carbon in the intake, valves and injectors.
Possible cause described
The half-shell thrust bearing was too weak; a 360-degree one has been fitted since April 2015. BMW issued no recall but offered goodwill repairs. The German guide sees no chain problems and says early oil consumption has largely disappeared; the petrol particulate filter (from March 2018) rarely causes trouble.
Check for the garage
On engines before April 2015 with a manual gearbox, ask BMW whether the bearing upgrade was done and listen for crankshaft noises; use quality fuel and inspect the intake if power drops.

Engine / equipment
MINI R50, R52 (convertible) and R53 (Cooper S), 2001–2006
Period mentioned
2001–2006
Symptoms
Midland manual gearbox with stiff shifts, wearing clutch and gearbox failures (grinding noise); cracked exhaust manifold and failing chain tensioner on the 1.6 Tritec; an ECU causing rough idle or stalling (up to 2003); water pump and supercharger on the Cooper S; engine mounts lasting 2–3 years; power-steering pump; thermostat housing and expansion tank leaking coolant; rust on the tailgate, window regulators and water inside.
Possible cause described
The German guide recommends cars after the 2004 facelift, which have the more reliable Getrag gearbox. At inspection, steering play, braking and oil leaks stand out; the ADAC cites battery terminals, fuel pump, clutch and power steering. Recalls: gear-cable clip (May 2001–May 2002), static electricity when refuelling (2001) and roof-rack mounts (August–November 2006).

Engine / equipment
Third-generation MINI F55, F56 and F57 (petrol, diesel and Cooper SE)
Period mentioned
2014–2024
Symptoms
Knocking from the engine bay due to engine mounts and a torque strut worn at low mileage; water in the boot and spare-wheel well of the F56; at inspection, headlights and handbrake and service brake; on petrols, carbon on the injectors and intake at high mileage; on the B37/B47 diesels, particulate filter, dual-mass flywheel, turbo, EGR and injectors.
Possible cause described
The German guide finds the B38/B48 and B37/B47 engines reliable; in the ADAC statistics the MINI is always green. Recalls: the spare-well bracket nut (2013–2014), seat height adjustment (August–September 2014), airbags (about 200 cars from 2016) and glycol leaking from the EGR cooler with a fire risk on the four-cylinder diesels (April 2015–September 2016).
Check for the garage
Listen for knocks when accelerating and lifting off; lift the boot floor; check campaigns by VIN.
