Official recalls: ask before you pay

A recall existing does not mean this car is affected or that it is still outstanding: it depends on the chassis number, the market and the production date.

  1. Ask the seller for the chassis number (VIN): it has 17 characters, appears in the car's documents and can usually also be seen at the base of the windscreen.
  2. Ask an official Kia dealer, or the brand's official website if it lets you check by chassis number, whether each recall has been done or is still outstanding for that VIN.
  3. Manufacturer recalls are normally carried out free of charge by the official service network. If one is outstanding, ask for it to be done before you close the sale.

On the test drive: what to look and listen for

Taken from each sheet's symptoms and checks. You can tick off what you have already looked at: it is saved only in this browser.

0 of 5 checked

High-voltage battery

  • Look out for: Usually no warning beforehand; in the worst case a short circuit with fire risk in the hybrid system’s HCA unit.

Ask them to check: Check by VIN at the dealer that the campaign has been done.

Electrical and electronic systems

  • Look out for: The multimedia screen sometimes does not respond to touch or stays completely black.

Ask them to check: Check the build date. If the garage confirms the fault, the fix is to replace the whole audio, video and navigation unit (about 40 minutes on the Sportage and under 20 on the others), taking care not to damage the dashboard trim.

  • Look out for: The display between the speedometer and the rev counter stays black and no warning sounds any more; or a needle falls off, shifts or sticks.

Ask them to check: Check the build date. The black display can only be fixed by replacing the whole instrument panel; the needle can sometimes be repaired with plastic stops, otherwise the panel is replaced too. There is no recall: ask the dealer to cover it under the 7-year warranty.

Automatic gearbox

  • Look out for: Abnormal vibration or shudder when pulling away and at low speed, especially in traffic.

Ask them to check: At the dealer: run the judder test with the diagnostic tool, install the latest gearbox software and replace the dual clutch only if the judder remains.

Brakes

  • Look out for: The brake pedal goes hard (less braking, you have to press harder) and the engine may not get enough oil, with a risk of mechanical damage.

Ask them to check: If the brake pedal goes hard, drive very carefully to a garage or call for assistance. Check by VIN with Kia whether your car is in the recall: the garage checks the vacuum and oil pump and, if it is damaged, replaces it with its drive belt (up to about 5 hours); sometimes only the belt needs replacing.
