Before you buy a used Kia Sportage (IV).
Taken only from Testigo's sourced sheets. Use it to question the seller and on the test drive: it does not confirm that any particular car is affected.

The essentials.
- 4 documented, sourced faults across its 2 engines.
- They all depend on the equipment or the production date: ask what this car has.
- 2 official recalls on record: ask for the chassis number (VIN) and confirm they have been done.
- According to the data we have, the engine with the fewest documented faults is the 1.6 GDi / T-GDi (Petrol).
Typical faults by engine
The period and mileage are those mentioned by each sheet's sources. They are not a maintenance interval and do not predict that any particular car will fail.

According to the data we have, the engine with the fewest documented faults is the 1.6 GDi / T-GDi (Petrol).
By fuel type, the one with the fewest documented faults is: Petrol.
We only count the sourced sheets we have. An engine with fewer is not guaranteed to be more reliable: it may have been studied less or sold in smaller numbers.
Official recalls: ask before you pay
A recall existing does not mean this car is affected or that it is still outstanding: it depends on the chassis number, the market and the production date.
- Ask the seller for the chassis number (VIN): it has 17 characters, appears in the car's documents and can usually also be seen at the base of the windscreen.
- Ask an official Kia dealer, or the brand's official website if it lets you check by chassis number, whether each recall has been done or is still outstanding for that VIN.
- Manufacturer recalls are normally carried out free of charge by the official service network. If one is outstanding, ask for it to be done before you close the sale.

Electrical and electronic systems
Look out for: The emergency braking light and the general warning triangle come on at times, and adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning or lane keeping assist stop working. Then they come back on their own.
Ask them to check: Clean the windscreen in front of the camera and note when it happens. At the garage, have them read the camera codes: with C1604-49 or C1606-49 the bulletin says to replace and calibrate it.
Look out for: The multimedia screen sometimes does not respond to touch or stays completely black.
Ask them to check: Check the build date. If the garage confirms the fault, the fix is to replace the whole audio, video and navigation unit (about 40 minutes on the Sportage and under 20 on the others), taking care not to damage the dashboard trim.
Automatic gearbox
Look out for: Abnormal vibration or shudder when pulling away and at low speed, especially in traffic.
Ask them to check: At the dealer: run the judder test with the diagnostic tool, install the latest gearbox software and replace the dual clutch only if the judder remains.
Brakes
Look out for: The brake pedal goes hard (less braking, you have to press harder) and the engine may not get enough oil, with a risk of mechanical damage.
Ask them to check: If the brake pedal goes hard, drive very carefully to a garage or call for assistance. Check by VIN with Kia whether your car is in the recall: the garage checks the vacuum and oil pump and, if it is damaged, replaces it with its drive belt (up to about 5 hours); sometimes only the belt needs replacing.
