2.0 TDCi turbo, coils and suspension on the Focus IIKnown weak points
Engine / equipment
Ford Focus II (petrol and diesel)
Period mentioned
2004–2011
Symptoms
On the 2.0 TDCi, a turbo starved of oil by a coked feed pipe; clogged EGR and auxiliary-belt tensioner; hesitation from moisture in the coil; the 1.6 Ti-VCT phaser; number-plate light, tailgate switch, ABS sensors and air conditioning; at the roadworthiness test, suspension, discs, oil leaks, exhaust and lights.
Possible cause described
The 2.0 TDCi turbo oil pipe ran too close to the manifold (fixed from 2008). Recalls: cooling-fan module (fire risk), 2.0 TDCi brake servo in the cold, a power-steering line and coolant monitoring.
Check for the garage
On the 2.0 TDCi, change the oil often and check the turbo pipe; check campaigns by VIN; check suspension and discs.

Misfires on the petrol Focus II: washer fluid dripping into the spark plug wellsIgnition
Engine / equipment
Petrol Ford Focus II
Period mentioned
2004–2011
Symptoms
The engine misfires (jerks, runs on three cylinders) and the engine warning light comes on; often after using the screen wash or in the rain.
Possible cause described
AUTO BILD (April 2010): on the petrol Focus II the washer jets on the bonnet leak and the aggressive fluid drips into the spark plug wells, where the plugs corrode until they fail.
Check for the garage
Have the coil removed and look for fluid or corrosion in the spark plug well. As well as drying it and replacing the plug (and the coil if needed), the leaking washer jet or pipe must be repaired, or it will happen again.

The clutch pedal over-centre spring breaks on the Focus IIClutch and flywheel
Engine / equipment
Ford Focus II with manual gearbox
Period mentioned
2004–2011
Symptoms
The clutch pedal feels different: heavier, without help at the end of its travel, or it does not return fully; sometimes with a snap when it breaks.
Possible cause described
AUTO BILD (April 2010): on the Focus II the clutch pedal over-centre spring (the one that helps press and return the pedal) breaks again and again.
Check for the garage
Before replacing the clutch or its cylinders, have the pedal spring under the dashboard checked: it is a cheap part. If the pedal does not come back, do not drive until it is repaired.
