Burnt-out starter motor on the Opel Astra G and Zafira A because of a stiff ignition lockElectrical and electronic systems
Engine / equipment
Opel Astra G and Zafira A, all engines
Period mentioned
Astra G: 1998–2004; Zafira A: 1999–2005
Symptoms
When you let go of the key, the starter keeps turning or whining with the engine already running; the key returns with difficulty. Over time the starter burns out and the car stops starting (nothing happens or there is just a click), sometimes with a burning smell.
Possible cause described
According to a Hella technical bulletin, if the starter is found damaged on these cars, the cause may be the ignition lock: the guide pin on its ramp goes stiff, the lock jams in the start position and the starter keeps running with the engine on, until the heat damages it.
Check for the garage
As well as replacing the starter, remove the ignition lock, check and oil the lock cylinder, check and grease the guide pin and check the ignition starter switch. Replace any damaged parts; otherwise the new starter will burn out again.
