ZF 8HP oil level, leaks and harsh shiftsAutomatic gearbox
Engine / equipment
ZF 8HP automatic gearbox in rear-wheel-drive BMWs from 2009 (1 to 8 Series and X: F20, F30, F10, G20, G30, X3, X5…)
Period mentioned
2009–2026
Symptoms
Harsh shifts (especially engaging D and 1st to 2nd), slipping or jerking; oil leaks from the pan, the mechatronic connector sleeve or the seals.
Possible cause described
BMW's diagnostic guide says an incorrect oil level is a frequent cause of shift complaints and asks for it to be checked every time, even with no visible leaks; the pan can be damaged by impacts. The sealing sleeve between gearbox and mechatronic lets oil through to the connector. The oil, sold as lifetime, degrades.
Check for the garage
Check the oil level with the official procedure (correct temperature and engine running), look for leaks at the pan, connector sleeve and seals, inspect the pan for impact damage and review adaptation values with ISTA.
Cost cited in the source
Oil change with pan and filter: maintenance; sleeve or seals: minor repair; mechatronic: expensive repairA rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.

Engines: 740d (Diesel) · 740i / 760i (Petrol) · 750e (Plug-in hybrid) · i7 (Electric)

Applies if: US bulletin SIB 32 05 26: 7 Series (G70), including the i7.

Creak when turning the steering wheel lock to lock, caused by tension in the steering rack (5 Series G60, 7 Series G70 and iX)Steering
Engine / equipment
BMW 5 Series (G60) and i5, 7 Series (G70) and i7, and iX
Period mentioned
From start of production
Symptoms
A creaking noise when turning the steering wheel from one lock to the other.
Possible cause described
The steering rack is under tension on the front axle carrier. BMW says to replace the steering rack mounting bolts and then check the wheel alignment (bulletin SIB 32 05 26).
Check for the garage
Tell the garage it creaks when turning lock to lock and ask them to apply bulletin SIB 32 05 26 (steering rack bolts) before replacing the rack.

Engines: 740i / 760i (Petrol)

Applies if: US bulletin SIB 12 11 26: only the B58 mild hybrid (B58B30M2) with energy recuperation (option 01CE).

Slight jolt at idle after 30–50 s stationary with Start/Stop off (B58 mild hybrid): it is normalPowertrain and engine management
Engine / equipment
BMW 3.0 petrol B58 48 V mild hybrid (B58B30M2)
Period mentioned
2024 (US model years)
Symptoms
With Start/Stop off and the car stationary, after about 30–50 seconds at idle there is a slight jolt or change in engine speed that feels like a misfire; no warning light and no fault codes.
Possible cause described
It is not a fault: while stationary, the engine is turned only by the crankshaft starter-generator, without combustion, until the 48 V battery drops to a certain charge; then combustion resumes with a slight jolt. BMW explains it in bulletin SIB 12 11 26.
Check for the garage
If there are no codes or warning lights, tell the garage BMW considers it normal operation (SIB 12 11 26) to avoid replacing coils, spark plugs or injectors.

Engines: i7 (Electric)

Applies if: Only cars built from June 2022 to 2024; confirm by VIN.

Integrated braking system (IBS) that can fail: ABS and DSC out of action and a hard pedalElectrical and electronic systems
Engine / equipment
BMW X1 and iX1 (U11), 2 Series Active Tourer (U06), 5 Series and i5 (G60), 7 Series and i7 (G70), X5, X6, X7, XM; MINI Cooper (F66 and J01) and Countryman (U25)
Period mentioned
2022–2024
Symptoms
The brake warning lights and a screen message come on; the pedal needs more force; ABS and stability control stop working.
Possible cause described
BMW recalled more than a million cars built from June 2022 over a supplier’s integrated braking system (Continental’s MK C2, according to the press): interference in its electronics, or broken welds in its servomotor according to the US recall, can make the pedal harder and leave the car without ABS or DSC. The whole system is replaced in about 3.5 hours (KBA 13586, BMW campaign 0034670200); there were waits of months because of parts shortages.
Check for the garage
Check campaign 0034670200 by VIN at a BMW or MINI dealer; if the brake warning appears, go to the garage straight away.
Cost cited in the source
Free under the recall.A rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.
