Fifth gear, rust and top mounts on the Fiat Ducato IIGearbox
Engine / equipment
Fiat Ducato II (also Peugeot Boxer and Citroën Jumper of the same era), petrol and JTD
Period mentioned
1994–2006
Symptoms
Broken fifth-gear teeth; gearbox leaks (speedometer-cable outlet); worn top mounts, wheel bearings and driveshaft gaiters; failing headlight levelling; clutches wearing out in motorhomes; rust; short circuits from coins falling from the glovebox onto the indicator relay.
Possible cause described
The fifth-gear wheel is a two-piece welded part and suffers if the gearbox is low on oil; the repair can cost up to €1,000. The 1.9 diesel is underpowered in motorhomes and can blow its head gasket; engines from 2.0 litres up cope better.
Check for the garage
Check the gearbox oil level and leaks; listen to fifth gear; check rust and top mounts.
Cost cited in the source
Up to about €1,000 for the fifth-gear repair, according to CarWiki.A rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.
