Leaking oil filter housing and cooler on the 3.6 PentastarEngine
- Engine / equipment
- 3.6 V6 Pentastar: Jeep Grand Cherokee, Wrangler and Gladiator, Chrysler Grand Voyager and 300C, Lancia Thema and Fiat Freemont
- Period mentioned
- 2011 onwards
- Symptoms
- Oil spots under the car, oil on the block below the housing (in the engine’s “V”), frequent top-ups and, in serious cases, a low oil-pressure warning; sometimes coolant leaks too.
- Possible cause described
- The plastic housing that holds the oil filter and cooler sits in the middle of the engine, exposed to heat: with heat cycles it warps and cracks. Overtightening the filter cap also damages it. Chrysler revised the design in 2014, but leaks still occur.
- Check for the garage
- Look for oil in the centre of the engine and under the car; do not overtighten the filter cap. The usual repair is replacing the whole assembly (aluminium versions exist), removing the intake manifolds, with new gaskets.

EGR, particulate filter, turbo, dual-mass flywheel and water pump on the 2.0 MultijetExhaust and emissions
- Engine / equipment
- 1956 cc 2.0 Multijet / JTDm (140–170 hp): Fiat Freemont, Alfa Romeo Giulietta and 159, Lancia Delta, Fiat Bravo
- Period mentioned
- Approx. 2008–2016
- Symptoms
- Engine warning light and loss of power (EGR); frequent regenerations or a particulate-filter warning in town; turbo whistle or smoke; vibration when starting and releasing the clutch; coolant loss.
- Possible cause described
- Poland’s Auto Świat describes this engine’s weak points: the electrically controlled EGR valve gives trouble in Fiat-group cars, every car has a particulate filter that suffers in town use, the turbo fails mostly at high mileage, the dual-mass flywheel wears out with harsh driving and the water pump leaks at its seal or loses its vanes, which can overload the timing belt.
- Check for the garage
- Read the EGR and particulate-filter codes; listen to the dual-mass flywheel when starting and stopping; replace the water pump with the timing belt; do long runs so the filter can regenerate.
