Vane oil pump on the Ranger 2.2 and 3.2 TDCiEngine
Engine / equipment
Ford Ranger 2.2 and 3.2 TDCi (Puma)
Period mentioned
2011–2022
Symptoms
Low oil-pressure warning, engine noise and, if the pump fails, seizure. After an oil change, the pump may not prime if the engine was left without oil for too long.
Possible cause described
The variable-displacement (vane) oil pump fails earlier than expected on the 2.2 and 3.2. Many owners replace it with a gear-type pump. If the engine is left without oil for more than about 10 minutes, the pump can lose its prime.
Check for the garage
Watch the oil pressure; when changing oil, refill straight away and check that pressure builds on start-up. Consider a gear-type pump at a specialist.
