Connecting-rod bearings on the Theta II 2.0 and 2.4 petrol enginesEngine
- Engine / equipment
- 2.0 and 2.4 Theta II (MPI and GDI): Hyundai Sonata, Santa Fe and ix35; Kia Sorento, Sportage and Optima
- Period mentioned
- 2009–2019
- Symptoms
- Metallic engine knock that rises with revs, oil-pressure warning, loss of power and, in the worst case, a broken connecting rod with an oil leak and fire risk.
- Possible cause described
- The connecting-rod bearings wear prematurely (in the first cases because of crankshaft machining debris). In the US there were recalls and a settlement that fits the KSDS system free of charge; it monitors vibration and puts the engine into protection mode. In Germany (KBA 013054) Kia recalled the Sorento 2.4 MPI built from 11/1/2011 to 17/6/2015 and the Optima 2.0 GDI hybrid.
- Check for the garage
- Ask Hyundai or Kia by VIN about a campaign or KSDS update; with knocking or the oil warning, stop and do not keep driving; check the oil level often.
- Cost cited in the source
- Inspection and, if damaged, a new engine free of charge under the campaigns.A rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.

Connecting rods and pistons on the 1.6 GDI (Gamma)Engine
- Engine / equipment
- 1.6 GDI Gamma: Kia Soul II and Carens IV, Hyundai Veloster, i40 and ix35
- Period mentioned
- 2012–2016
- Symptoms
- Engine knock, oil-pressure warning and loss of power; with an overheated catalytic converter, abnormal combustion that damages the pistons.
- Possible cause described
- Two defects documented in the US: on the 2012–2016 Kia Soul, high exhaust temperatures could damage the catalytic converter and, with it, pistons and connecting rods (recall 19V-120, new protection software); on the 2015–2016 Veloster, the connecting-rod bearings wore early (recall 20V-746, KSDS software).
- Check for the garage
- Ask by VIN about an outstanding campaign; with knocking or the oil warning, stop. Check the catalytic converter if there is hesitation or loss of power.

Steering joints, drive shafts, starter and recalls on the ix35Known weak points
- Engine / equipment
- Hyundai ix35 (LM), petrol and diesel
- Period mentioned
- 2010–2015
- Symptoms
- Poor roadworthiness-test results for steering joints, drive shafts, lights and brakes; a starter that fails more than normal on the petrols; on the 1.7 CRDi, isolated cases of a stretched chain; rust on the tailgate on some cars.
- Possible cause described
- The German guide rates the 1.7 CRDi as unproblematic; on the diesels typical wear (particulate filter, dual-mass flywheel, turbo, EGR, injectors) comes with high mileage or many short trips. Recalls: driver’s seat-belt pretensioner (built 10/2011–6/2012) and the brake booster on some 2011 1.7 diesels.
- Check for the garage
- Check outstanding recalls by VIN (manufacturer, KBA or ADAC website) and have a garage inspect the points listed before buying or before the roadworthiness test.
