Engines: 1.6 GDi Hybrid (Hybrid) · 1.6 GDi Plug-in Hybrid (Plug-in hybrid)

Applies if: Kia US bulletins for cars built from June 2022 to February 2023; confirm by VIN.

Applies if: Only the gearbox bulletin (TRA106): built from 14/6/2022 to 12/12/2022; confirm by VIN.

Dual-clutch gearbox not engaging second gear and 12 V lithium battery overcharging (Niro II hybrid)Gearbox
Engine / equipment
Second-generation Kia Niro hybrid and plug-in hybrid with the 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox
Period mentioned
2022–2023
Symptoms
Fault light and code P074A73 (second gear will not engage); on the hybrid, loss of power with “Check hybrid system, stop safely”, hybrid-system, service and charging warning lights and beeping for about ten seconds.
Possible cause described
Kia technical bulletin TRA106 (February 2023) for model-year 2023 Niro hybrids and plug-in hybrids built from 14/6/2022 to 12/12/2022: the clutch actuator and gearbox control unit earth bolts are tightened and the gearbox software is updated. In addition, service campaign SC335 (February 2025, superseding ELE318/SA553) updates the battery management software on Niro hybrids built from 21/6/2022 to 6/2/2023, because the 12 V lithium battery can overcharge (code P1BB2) and reduce power.
Check for the garage
Read codes P074A73 and P1BB2 and ask Kia by VIN whether bulletin TRA106 and the battery update have been applied.

Engines: Niro EV (Electric)

Applies if: Only cars built from 11/7/2022 to 24/1/2024 (US bulletin).

Coolant leak from the loose electric water pump hose on the Niro EVCooling
Engine / equipment
Niro EV (II) electric
Period mentioned
2022–2024
Symptoms
A "refill coolant" message on the dashboard and a heater that warms less and less; sometimes drops of fluid under the front.
Possible cause described
The hose from the electric water pump to the high-voltage battery comes loose at its connector, because the retainer clip was fitted horizontally, and leaks coolant under the bulkhead. Kia fits an improved hose with the clip rotated 90° (bulletin ELE332, April 2024, for Niro EVs built from 11/7/2022 to 24/1/2024).
Check for the garage
Do not open the coolant reservoir when hot. It is a high-voltage car: at a qualified garage, have them check the electric water pump hose connector.

Engines: Niro EV (Electric)

Applies if: Kia US bulletin for cars built from 4/1/2022 to 29/3/2023; confirm by VIN.

Integrated charging control unit (ICCU) that stops charging on the second-generation Niro EVHigh-voltage battery
Engine / equipment
Second-generation Kia Niro EV
Period mentioned
2022–2023
Symptoms
Slow or no charging on a household socket or AC wallbox (it does charge on fast chargers); “Check electric vehicle system” or “Stop vehicle and check power supply” messages and the fault light.
Possible cause described
The ICCU combines the on-board charger and the converter that charges the 12 V battery. Kia technical bulletin ELE298 (September 2023) covers poor or no AC charging on model-year 2023 Niro EVs built from 4/1/2022 to 29/3/2023: depending on the stored codes (DC/DC converter or charger), the ICCU is replaced.
Check for the garage
Try charging on AC as well as on a fast charger, read the codes and ask Kia by VIN whether bulletin ELE298 has been applied.
