Autotronic automatic gearbox (CVT 722.8) on the A-Class and B-ClassGearbox
Engine / equipment
Autotronic continuously variable transmission (722.8): A-Class W169 and B-Class W245
Period mentioned
2004–2012
Symptoms
Limp mode, loss of power and a “Transmission: visit workshop” warning; speed-sensor codes (0722, 0793); noises or slipping at high mileage.
Possible cause described
Mainly the speed sensors and the control unit inside the gearbox oil fail; metal particles from infrequent oil changes make it worse. The variator push belt can wear prematurely. Repairing the gearbox rarely pays off because of the cost.
Check for the garage
Read the gearbox codes; change oil and filter on schedule (or earlier); consider repairing the control unit at a specialist before replacing the whole gearbox.
Cost cited in the source
Approx. £500–600 to repair the control unit at a specialist; a new gearbox costs several thousand.A rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.
