Autotronic automatic gearbox (CVT 722.8) on the A-Class and B-ClassGearbox
- Engine / equipment
- Autotronic continuously variable transmission (722.8): A-Class W169 and B-Class W245
- Period mentioned
- 2004–2012
- Symptoms
- Limp mode, loss of power and a “Transmission: visit workshop” warning; speed-sensor codes (0722, 0793); noises or slipping at high mileage.
- Possible cause described
- Mainly the speed sensors and the control unit inside the gearbox oil fail; metal particles from infrequent oil changes make it worse. The variator push belt can wear prematurely. Repairing the gearbox rarely pays off because of the cost.
- Check for the garage
- Read the gearbox codes; change oil and filter on schedule (or earlier); consider repairing the control unit at a specialist before replacing the whole gearbox.
- Cost cited in the source
- Approx. £500–600 to repair the control unit at a specialist; a new gearbox costs several thousand.A rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.
