A front door will not open from inside or outside although the handles and latch are fine (Leaf of 2018–2021)Bodywork
Engine / equipment
Front door latch and its stiffener: Nissan Leaf (ZE1)
Period mentioned
2018–2021
Symptoms
One or both front doors will not open with the inside or outside handle, although the handles, cables and latch work and the door is not damaged.
Possible cause described
According to Nissan bulletin NTB18-042b (USA, January 2021) for the 2018–2021 Leaf ZE1 (and other models), the gap between the latch lever and the stiffener tab must be inspected and adjusted following the bulletin’s steps (simply bending the tab is not enough).
Check for the garage
Ask the garage to adjust the latch gap as the bulletin describes before replacing handles or latches.

Clicking or popping from the front axle area when pulling away, accelerating or slowing down (Leaf of 2018–2023)Suspension and steering
Engine / equipment
Wheel nuts and front axle area: Nissan Leaf (ZE1)
Period mentioned
2018–2023
Symptoms
A click or pop from the front axle area when pulling away, accelerating or slowing down.
Possible cause described
According to Nissan bulletin NTB19-105C (USA, September 2022) for the 2018–2023 Leaf ZE1, before any diagnosis the wheel nuts on all four wheels are torqued to 113 Nm in a diagonal pattern; if the noise remains, it is diagnosed following the service manual.
Check for the garage
First have the wheel nuts tightened to the bulletin’s torque (113 Nm, diagonally); it is the cheapest step and comes before looking for other causes.

Horn not working because of a pinched ground wire in the horn pad (Leaf of 2018–2023)Electrical and electronic systems
Engine / equipment
Horn pad ground wire and horns: Nissan Leaf (ZE1)
Period mentioned
2018–2023
Symptoms
The horn does not sound.
Possible cause described
According to Nissan bulletin NTB22-051B (USA, July 2023) for the 2018–2023 Leaf ZE1 (and other models), the horn pad is inspected for a pinched ground wire; if one is found, the high and low horns are replaced. Reaching it requires removing the steering wheel airbag.
Check for the garage
Do not remove the centre of the steering wheel yourself: it holds the airbag. Have the horn ground wire checked as the bulletin describes. Without a horn the car can fail the MOT or periodic inspection.

Engines: e+ 62 kWh (Electric)

Applies if: US bulletin for the Leaf with the 62 kWh battery; ask a Nissan dealer whether it applies to your car.

The car will not start with codes P31E7 and P0AA6 because of a battery module with a bent retention plate (Leaf e+ 62 kWh)High-voltage battery
Engine / equipment
62 kWh lithium-ion battery modules: Nissan Leaf (ZE1) e+
Period mentioned
2019–2025
Symptoms
The car does not start and has codes P31E7 (restart inhibition) and P0AA6 (high-voltage system isolation) stored.
Possible cause described
According to Nissan bulletin NTB23-024A (USA, May 2024) for the 2019–2025 Leaf ZE1 with the 62 kWh battery, if a battery module triggered the codes, it is inspected for a bent retention plate and, if so, the module is replaced.
Check for the garage
Do not keep trying to start it: it is a high-voltage fault. Call for assistance and have a Nissan dealer follow the bulletin’s diagnosis to see whether a battery module is the cause.
