Oil leaks, clutch and water pump on the first-generation MéganeKnown weak points
Engine / equipment
Renault Mégane I and Scénic I (petrol and diesel)
Period mentioned
1996–2003
Symptoms
Engine or gearbox oil leaks, a clutch worn out before 100,000 km, leaking shock absorbers, a leaking water pump and a rusty exhaust; light and rear-brake faults.
Possible cause described
It usually leaks from the sump gasket (easy) or the gearbox output seals (expensive). The water pump often fails after a few tens of thousands of kilometres and the exhaust typically lasts about three years before rusting through.
Check for the garage
When replacing the clutch, also replace the gearbox seals; watch the coolant and check shock absorbers, lights and rear brakes.
