Applies if: Toyota USA tech tip for all its models: it applies if the judder began after wheels, pads or discs were removed or changed.

Brake judder from wheel nuts over-tightened or tightened unevenly (Toyota tech tip)Brakes
Engine / equipment
Any Toyota: it depends on how the wheels are tightened
Period mentioned
2016 tech tip for all its models
Symptoms
Vibration in the steering wheel and the pedal when braking, even gently and at any speed, often shortly after wheels, pads or discs were changed.
Possible cause described
Toyota points out in a tech tip that if the wheel nuts are over-tightened or tightened unevenly (a single one is enough), the brake disc is left with runout and brake judder appears. It happens above all when they are run fully home with an impact gun instead of a torque wrench in a star pattern.
Check for the garage
Ask the garage to loosen and re-tighten the nuts with a torque wrench, to the manual's torque and in a star pattern, and to measure whether the discs have been left warped; if so, they will need skimming or replacing.

Applies if: Same engines as the Verso; failures are concentrated in engines built before late 2011.

Head gasket, cracks and EGR on the Verso and Avensis III dieselsEngine
Engine / equipment
2.0 D-4D (1AD), 2.2 D-4D and D-CAT (2AD) and the BMW-sourced 1.6 D-4D: Toyota Verso and Avensis III
Period mentioned
2009–2018
Symptoms
Coolant loss, overheating or white smoke (gasket or head); on the 1.6 D-4D, hesitation, loss of power or the engine stopping.
Possible cause described
The German guide lists head-gasket failures on the 2.0 D-4D and hairline cracks in the head of the 2.2 D-4D and D-CAT, plus the D-CAT fifth injector; Toyota ran a service campaign and the failures were solved by late 2011. On the 1.6 D-4D built from January 2014 to January 2015, EGR condensation could reach the throttle body (recall).
Check for the garage
Combustion-gas test on the coolant and check oil consumption; ask Toyota by VIN whether the campaign was done. On the 1.6 D-4D, check the EGR recall.

Underbody rust, EGR, 2.0 diesel turbo and clutch on the Avensis IIIKnown weak points
Engine / equipment
Toyota Avensis III (Valvematic and diesel)
Period mentioned
2009–2018
Symptoms
Thin underbody protection with rust spots; dirty EGR (weak power, jerks); on the 2.0 diesel, exhaust gas in the engine bay from loose turbo bolts and a leaking low-pressure fuel line; brakes and clutch that wear early; battery, starter and alternator with mileage.
Possible cause described
Points collected by the German guide; Toyota sometimes replaces the whole turbo as goodwill.

Check the underbody and its protection; on diesels, exhaust smell and turbo bolts; test the clutch.
