Clogged hybrid battery cooling fan and filterHigh-voltage battery
Engine / equipment
Hybrid battery cooled with cabin air (intake next to the rear seat): Prius, Yaris, Auris, Corolla, C-HR, RAV4, Camry and others
Period mentioned
2003 onwards
Symptoms
Hybrid battery cooling maintenance message, warning light with codes P0A80 or P0A7F, a noisy fan and less electric assistance; if ignored, the battery ages faster.
Possible cause described
Dust, pet hair or dirt block the filter and fan that cool the battery; so do objects covering the intake. Toyota USA issued bulletin T-SB-0074-20 (2003–2020 Prius and Camry, Corolla, Highlander, RAV4 and Mirai hybrids up to 2020) and recommends cleaning the filter every 5,000 miles (about 8,000 km).
Check for the garage
Clean or replace the filter and clean the fan before condemning the battery; keep the intake grille clear. At the garage, read the codes and, if needed, install the software Toyota specifies.

Applies if: Weak points of this model from inspections, breakdown statistics and recalls; anything specific to one engine is stated in the sheet.

Battery, rear brakes, brake servo and eCall on the Corolla (from 2019)Known weak points
Engine / equipment
Toyota Corolla (2019 onwards: 1.2 turbo and hybrids)
Period mentioned
2019 onwards
Symptoms
A starter battery that fails early on the first cars; seized and rusty rear brakes, especially on hybrids; a brake servo that can fail on 2019 cars (more pedal effort); an eCall that does not activate.
Possible cause described
The brake-servo pump is replaced under warranty or goodwill. A recall for the eCall on cars built 2018 to 2021.
Check for the garage
Check the campaigns by VIN; brake hard now and then to clean the rear discs; test the battery.

Applies if: Only the 2.0 Hybrid (M20A-FXS), not the 1.8. Toyota USA bulletin for the same engine.

Milky oil and low oil-pressure warning in freezing weather (Toyota 2.0 M20A and 2.5 A25A engines)Engine
Engine / equipment
Petrol 2.0 (M20A-FKS), 2.0 hybrid (M20A-FXS) and 2.5 hybrid (A25A-FXS): Corolla, Corolla Cross, C-HR, RAV4 and Camry
Period mentioned
2018–2024
Symptoms
In sub-zero temperatures with many short trips: milky or discoloured oil on the dipstick and under the filler cap, an “Oil Pressure Low” message on the instrument panel and the engine warning light. Codes P05202A (oil pressure sensor stuck) and P052477 (oil pressure too low).
Possible cause described
According to Toyota USA bulletin T-SB-0104-21, moisture from the blow-by gases condenses and builds up in the oil on short trips in extreme cold; when that moisture freezes, oil pressure can drop and the warnings appear. The same milky look appears if coolant mixes with the oil through an internal leak, which is a different and more serious fault.
Check for the garage
With the oil-pressure warning, stop the engine and do not carry on until it is checked. The garage first pressure-tests the cooling system to rule out an internal leak; if there is none, it changes the oil and filter, wipes the milky residue off the cap and checks with the engine warm (coolant at about 50 °C) that the warning and codes do not come back. If they do, the diagnosis must continue with the workshop manual.
Cost cited in the source
An oil and filter change if there is no internal leak; the bulletin does not cover it under warranty.A rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.

Applies if: Only the 1.8 Hybrid (2ZR-FXE), not the 2.0. Toyota USA bulletin for the same engine.

Engine warning light and throttle codes P2100 / P2111 on the 1.8 hybrid (2ZR-FXE)Engine
Engine / equipment
Fourth-generation 1.8 hybrid (2ZR-FXE): Corolla hybrid and Prius
Period mentioned
2016–2024
Symptoms
The engine warning light (MIL) comes on. The engine computer stores codes P210015 (throttle actuator motor circuit shorted to battery or open), P210019 (throttle actuator motor current too high) or P211172 (throttle stuck open).
Possible cause described
Toyota USA bulletin T-SB-0016-24 (Corolla hybrid 2020–2024, Prius 2016–2022 and Prius Prime) says Toyota changed the engine computer logic to reduce the chance of these codes setting; the repair is to reprogram the computer, not to replace parts.
Check for the garage
Read the full codes (with their last two digits) and ask Toyota whether there is a newer engine-computer program for your VIN before replacing the throttle body. If the code returns after reprogramming, check the throttle connector and wiring.
Cost cited in the source
In the US the reprogramming is covered by the emissions warranty; in Europe, ask Toyota.A rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.
