Applies if: Toyota USA tech tip for all its models: it applies if the judder began after wheels, pads or discs were removed or changed.

Brake judder from wheel nuts over-tightened or tightened unevenly (Toyota tech tip)Brakes
Engine / equipment
Any Toyota: it depends on how the wheels are tightened
Period mentioned
2016 tech tip for all its models
Symptoms
Vibration in the steering wheel and the pedal when braking, even gently and at any speed, often shortly after wheels, pads or discs were changed.
Possible cause described
Toyota points out in a tech tip that if the wheel nuts are over-tightened or tightened unevenly (a single one is enough), the brake disc is left with runout and brake judder appears. It happens above all when they are run fully home with an impact gun instead of a torque wrench in a star pattern.
Check for the garage
Ask the garage to loosen and re-tighten the nuts with a torque wrench, to the manual's torque and in a star pattern, and to measure whether the discs have been left warped; if so, they will need skimming or replacing.

Applies if: Only the 2.8 D-4D (from 2015).

Particulate filter on the 2.8 D-4D (1GD-FTV)Exhaust and emissions
Engine / equipment
2.8 D-4D (1GD-FTV): Hilux, Land Cruiser and Fortuner
Period mentioned
2015–2020
Symptoms
White smoke and smell from the exhaust, regenerations that never finish, particulate-filter warnings and loss of power, especially in town or at low load.
Possible cause described
The particulate-filter system did not regenerate properly in normal driving. In Australia a federal court decided a class action covering 264,170 vehicles sold between October 2015 and April 2020; Toyota offered a fix at its dealers.
Check for the garage
Ask Toyota by VIN whether the filter update was applied; read the codes and run a controlled regeneration at the garage.

Applies if: Only the 3.0 D-4D (1KD-FTV).

Injector seats and cracked pistons on the 3.0 D-4D (1KD-FTV)Injection / turbo
Engine / equipment
3.0 D-4D (1KD-FTV): Hilux, Land Cruiser and Dyna
Period mentioned
Approx. 2005–2015
Symptoms
Rattle when cold, rough idle, smoke and blow-by; dirty, sludgy oil and, if the oil pickup blocks, serious engine failure.
Possible cause described
The copper seats under the injectors often failed and let gases into the crankcase: the oil gets dirty and can block the pickup screen. Faulty injectors are also linked to cracked pistons; Toyota issued a bulletin (EG-008T-0112) for Euro IV engines.
Check for the garage
Check for blow-by at the oil filler cap, test the injectors (back-leak test) and inspect their seats; clean the pickup screen if the oil is sludgy.

Applies if: Early years (2009–2013); the later 2.8 D-4D is a different engine.

Noisy V6 injectors and diesel injector seals on the Land Cruiser 150Injection / turbo
Engine / equipment
Toyota Land Cruiser 150 (Prado 150), 4.0 V6 petrol and 3.0 D-4D
Period mentioned
2009–2013
Symptoms
V6: noisy injectors. High-mileage diesel: fuel getting past the injector seals and contaminating the oil. Some owners notice a vibration between 1,500 and 2,000 rpm and, on early automatics, a hesitant gearbox.
Possible cause described
According to CarsGuide (Prado is the Australian name of the Land Cruiser), the chain-driven V6 gives little trouble apart from noisy injectors. On the diesel, sludge can block the oil pick-up and destroy the engine if not caught; the seals should be replaced at the valve-clearance check every two years or 40,000 km. The automatic’s hesitation was fixed with a software update.
Check for the garage
Check the service history (injector-seal changes on the diesel) and have the oil pick-up inspected through the sump plug; look for underbody damage from off-road use.
