Brake judder from wheel nuts over-tightened or tightened unevenly (Toyota tech tip)Brakes
- Engine / equipment
- Any Toyota: it depends on how the wheels are tightened
- Period mentioned
- 2016 tech tip for all its models
- Symptoms
- Vibration in the steering wheel and the pedal when braking, even gently and at any speed, often shortly after wheels, pads or discs were changed.
- Possible cause described
- Toyota points out in a tech tip that if the wheel nuts are over-tightened or tightened unevenly (a single one is enough), the brake disc is left with runout and brake judder appears. It happens above all when they are run fully home with an impact gun instead of a torque wrench in a star pattern.
- Check for the garage
- Ask the garage to loosen and re-tighten the nuts with a torque wrench, to the manual's torque and in a star pattern, and to measure whether the discs have been left warped; if so, they will need skimming or replacing.

- Engine / equipment
- 2.0 D-4D (1AD), 2.2 D-4D and D-CAT (2AD) and the BMW-sourced 1.6 D-4D: Toyota Verso and Avensis III
- Period mentioned
- 2009–2018
- Symptoms
- Coolant loss, overheating or white smoke (gasket or head); on the 1.6 D-4D, hesitation, loss of power or the engine stopping.
- Possible cause described
- The German guide lists head-gasket failures on the 2.0 D-4D and hairline cracks in the head of the 2.2 D-4D and D-CAT, plus the D-CAT fifth injector; Toyota ran a service campaign and the failures were solved by late 2011. On the 1.6 D-4D built from January 2014 to January 2015, EGR condensation could reach the throttle body (recall).
- Check for the garage
- Combustion-gas test on the coolant and check oil consumption; ask Toyota by VIN whether the campaign was done. On the 1.6 D-4D, check the EGR recall.

Lights, brakes and recalls on the Toyota Verso (AR20)Known weak points
- Engine / equipment
- Toyota Verso (AR20), Valvematic petrol and diesel
- Period mentioned
- 2009–2018
- Symptoms
- Lights that often fail the roadworthiness test (re-test needed), worn brake discs, faulty parking brake and a rusty exhaust.
- Possible cause described
- The German guide rates the 1.6 / 1.8 Valvematic petrols as durable (the chain lasts a lifetime and oil consumption is hardly heard of); the diesels have their own sheet. Recalls: accelerator pedal (2/2009–1/2010), passenger airbag (up to 2010), power-steering unit failing from moisture (8/2010–7/2011), under-torqued steering-wheel nut (5–8/2013), leaking fuel filter with fire risk (model year 2014) and the diesel EGR (2015–2018).
- Check for the garage
- Check outstanding recalls by VIN (manufacturer, KBA or ADAC website) and have a garage inspect the points listed before buying or before the roadworthiness test.
