Intake Camshaft Position Timing - Over-Retarded (Bank 1)
The engine advances or retards the intake camshaft according to load with an adjuster driven by oil pressure.
What the car has detected
The ECU asks for the intake camshaft to advance, but the adjuster does not get there: it stays more retarded than asked.
The car usually keeps running, but it may lack power or idle roughly, and the cause may be the oil or the timing. Have it checked soon.
Symptoms
- Engine warning light on
- Rough idle
- Lack of power at low revs
Possible causes
- Camshaft adjuster tight or stuck
- Low, dirty oil or low oil pressure
- Faulty adjuster solenoid valve
- Timing out (stretched chain)
Checks for the garage
- Check the oil level and condition
- Test the adjuster with the diagnostic tool
- Check the timing if the adjuster is fine
Next step
Ask for the oil level and pressure, the adjuster solenoid valve and the timing to be checked.
Go to a garage soon, sooner if the engine rattles like a chain at start-up. Use the oil the maker specifies.
