OBD2 CODE

P0014 Exhaust camshaft too advanced (bank 1)

Urgency medium

A code identifies a signal or system that needs to be checked, not a part you should replace.

Exhaust Camshaft Position Timing - Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1)

On many engines the exhaust camshaft also has an adjuster, moved by oil pressure, that changes its position with load.

What the car has detected

The ECU asks for the exhaust camshaft to retard, but it stays more advanced than asked.

The car usually keeps running, but it may lack power or idle roughly. Have it checked soon and keep an eye on the oil level.

Symptoms

  • Engine warning light on
  • Rough idle

Possible causes

  • Exhaust camshaft adjuster tight or stuck
  • Faulty adjuster solenoid valve
  • Low, dirty oil or low oil pressure

Checks for the garage

  • Check the oil level and condition
  • Test the adjuster with the diagnostic tool

Next step

Ask for the oil, the solenoid valve and the exhaust camshaft adjuster to be checked.

Go to a garage in the next few days. Use the oil the maker specifies.
