P0100 Air flow meter (MAF): circuit fault

Urgency medium

A code identifies a signal or system that needs to be checked, not a part you should replace.

Mass or Volume Air Flow Sensor A Circuit

The air flow meter (MAF sensor) measures how much air goes into the engine. The ECU uses it to work out the fuel and, on diesels, the exhaust gas recirculation.

What the car has detected

The ECU has found a fault in the air flow meter’s supply or circuit.

Without a reliable reading the ECU uses default values and the car usually has less power. It can be driven gently to a garage.

Symptoms

  • Engine warning light on
  • Less power when accelerating

Possible causes

  • Broken or shorted wire, or a loose or corroded connector
  • Faulty or dirty air flow meter
  • Blown fuse

Checks for the garage

  • Check the air flow meter wiring and connector
  • Measure the air flow meter supply
  • Compare measured and expected air in live data

Next step

Ask for the air flow meter wiring and connector to be checked before it is replaced.

Go to a garage in the next few days. Reading the live data needs a diagnostic tool.
