Manifold Absolute Pressure/Barometric Pressure Sensor Range/Performance
One sensor measures the air pressure in the intake manifold (MAP sensor) and another the outside pressure. From those readings the ECU works out how much air goes in and how much fuel to inject.
What the car has detected
The pressure the sensor reads does not match what the ECU expects at that speed and load, or does not agree with the outside pressure sensor.
The car usually keeps running, but with the mixture worked out wrongly it may lack power, use more fuel or jerk. It is worth having it checked soon.
Symptoms
- Engine warning light on
- Rough idle or hesitation
- Lack of power or higher fuel use
Possible causes
- Dirty or faulty manifold pressure (MAP) sensor
- Air or vacuum leak in the intake
- Wrong replacement part fitted
- ECU software that needs an update, on some engines
Checks for the garage
- Compare the live data reading with the expected one
- Look for leaks in the hoses and the intake manifold
- Check the sensor wiring and connector
Next step
Ask for the manifold pressure sensor, its wiring and any air leaks in the intake to be checked.
Go to a garage in the next few days. Reading the sensor’s live data needs a diagnostic tool.
