P0343 Camshaft position sensor: signal too high

Urgency medium

A code identifies a signal or system that needs to be checked, not a part you should replace.

Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit High (Bank 1 or Single Sensor)

The camshaft position sensor (phase sensor) tells the ECU where each cylinder is in its cycle.

What the car has detected

The sensor signal stays too high, often because of a broken wire, one touching positive or a faulty sensor.

The car may be slow to start or not start. Have it checked soon so you are not left stranded.

Symptoms

  • Engine warning light on
  • Long cranking or the engine does not start

Possible causes

  • Broken or shorted wire, or a loose or corroded connector
  • Failed camshaft sensor
  • Broken sensor earth

Checks for the garage

  • Check the sensor wiring and connector
  • Measure the sensor’s supply, earth and signal

Next step

Ask for the wiring and connector of the camshaft sensor to be checked before it is replaced.

Go to a garage soon. If the car will not start, call for assistance instead of cranking on.
