Evaporative Emission System Incorrect Purge Flow
Petrol vapour from the tank is stored in a charcoal filter (canister) and a valve sends it to the engine to be burnt.
What the car has detected
The vapour flow reaching the engine is not the expected one: the purge valve is stuck or a pipe is broken or blocked.
It is not dangerous, though there may be a petrol smell or a slightly rough idle after refuelling. Have it checked when you can.
Symptoms
- Engine warning light on
- Petrol smell or rough idle after refuelling
Possible causes
- Stuck or faulty canister purge valve
- Broken, loose or blocked vapour pipe
- Damaged canister
Checks for the garage
- Test the purge valve with the diagnostic tool
- Check the pipes between the tank, the canister and the intake
Next step
Ask for the canister purge valve and the pipes to the intake to be checked.
You can keep using the car and book a visit without hurry. If the petrol smell is strong, go sooner.
