Idle Control System RPM Higher Than Expected
At idle the ECU holds a set engine speed by opening the throttle valve more or less.
What the car has detected
The idle speed is above what the ECU asks for, even with the throttle closed: air is getting in where it should not.
It is not dangerous, but the car may use more fuel and the high idle is noticeable when stopped. Have it checked when you can.
Symptoms
- Engine warning light on
- High idle or idle that rises and falls
Possible causes
- Air leak in a hose or in the intake
- Dirty or faulty throttle body
- Faulty crankcase breather valve, on some engines
Checks for the garage
- Listen for hissing or look for split hoses at idle
- Clean the throttle body and run its adaptation
- Check the crankcase breather
Next step
Ask for air leaks in the intake to be found and the throttle body to be cleaned or checked.
You can keep using the car and book a visit without hurry.
