P0603 Control module permanent memory error

Urgency medium

A code identifies a signal or system that needs to be checked, not a part you should replace.

Internal Control Module Keep Alive Memory (KAM) Error

Each control unit monitors itself and checks its memory every time it runs.

What the car has detected

The control unit could not read or store the data in its permanent memory properly, for example after the battery went flat.

It often appears after the battery was disconnected or went flat and clears on its own. If it comes back, the unit may be failing: have it checked soon.

Symptoms

  • Engine warning light on
  • Lost settings, such as the learnt idle

Possible causes

  • Battery recently flat or disconnected
  • Wrong control unit coding
  • Failed engine computer

Checks for the garage

  • Check the battery and charging voltage
  • Clear the code and see whether it returns
  • Check the control unit coding

Next step

Ask for the battery to be checked, the code cleared and watched; if it returns, ask for the unit’s coding to be checked.

Go to a garage in the next few days. Reading the live data needs a diagnostic tool.
