Intake Manifold Runner Position Sensor/Switch Circuit Range/Performance (Bank 1)
Many engines have flaps inside the intake manifold (swirl flaps) that change how the air flows in depending on engine speed. A motor moves them and a sensor reports their position.
What the car has detected
The position the flap sensor reports is not the one the ECU asked for: they are stuck, the linkage is broken or the motor is failing.
The car usually lacks power but can be driven gently. If a flap comes loose inside the manifold it can damage the engine, so have it checked soon.
Symptoms
- Engine warning light on
- Lack of power
Possible causes
- Flaps stuck with soot
- Faulty flap motor or broken linkage
- Broken or shorted wire, or a loose or corroded connector
- ECU software that needs an update, on some engines
Checks for the garage
- Test the flap movement with the diagnostic tool
- Check the flap linkage and motor
- Check the sensor wiring and connector
Next step
Ask for the flap motor, the linkage and the intake manifold to be checked.
Go to a garage in the next few days. Sometimes only a new complete manifold fixes it.
