Intake Air System Leak
All the air going into the engine should pass through the air flow meter or the throttle, so the ECU takes it into account.
What the car has detected
The ECU has worked out that air is getting in somewhere else: a vacuum leak, the manifold flaps or the crankcase breather.
It is not dangerous, but the idle may be rough and fuel use rise. Have it checked when you can.
Symptoms
- Engine warning light on
- Rough idle
- Higher fuel use
Possible causes
- Vacuum leak in a hose or the manifold
- Manifold flaps out of position
- Faulty crankcase breather
Checks for the garage
- Run a smoke test on the intake
- Check the crankcase breather
- Check the manifold flaps
Next step
Ask for an intake leak test and for the crankcase breather to be checked.
You can keep using the car and book a visit without hurry.
