A code identifies a signal or system that needs to be checked, not a part you should replace.

P0011Intake camshaft too far advanced (bank 1)Urgency medium

Intake Camshaft Position Timing - Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1)

The engine shifts the intake camshaft with the load, for more power and lower consumption. The ECU compares the position it asks for with the one the camshaft sensor measures.

What the car has detected

The bank 1 intake camshaft does not return to the requested position: it stays further advanced than it should.

The car usually keeps running, but it may lack power and the cause may be in the timing. Have it checked soon and do not push the engine in the meantime.

Symptoms

  • Engine warning light on
  • Loss of power or limp mode
  • Hesitation or rough idle

Possible causes

  • Faulty camshaft adjustment valve (variable timing)
  • Timing out of adjustment (chain or belt)
  • Clogged variable-timing oil strainer, on some engines

Checks for the garage

  • Check the oil level and condition
  • Test the camshaft adjustment valve with the diagnostic tool
  • Check the timing if the valve is fine

Next step

Ask them to check the valve that adjusts the camshaft (variable timing), the oil level and condition, and the timing.

Go to a garage soon, especially if you notice a lack of power or the engine sounds odd when starting. Checking the timing needs workshop tools.
