P0480Radiator fan control circuit faultUrgency high

Fan 1 Control Circuit

The radiator fan switches on when the engine or the air conditioning need cooling; the ECU controls it, sometimes through a module.

What the car has detected

The ECU detects an electrical fault in the fan 1 control circuit: a fuse, its control module, the fan motor or the wiring.

If the fan does not work, the engine can overheat in traffic, at idle or in hot weather, and that can damage it. Watch the temperature and have it checked as soon as possible.

Symptoms

  • Engine warning light on
  • The fan does not start or does not stop
  • The temperature rises in traffic or at idle
  • The air conditioning cools less with the car standing still

Possible causes

  • Blown fuse
  • Faulty fan control module
  • Blocked or damaged fan
  • Damaged fan wiring or connectors

Checks for the garage

  • Remove the fan fuse before checking the circuit (it may start by itself)
  • Check the fan fuses
  • Switch the fan on with the diagnostic tool (actuator test)
  • Check that the fan turns freely and nothing blocks it
  • Check the wiring and connectors of the fan and its module

Next step

Ask them to check the fan fuses, its control module, the fan itself and its wiring.

Go to a garage as soon as possible. If the temperature gauge rises a lot or steam comes out, stop somewhere safe and switch the engine off. Do not open the coolant tank while hot.
