P2463Diesel particulate filter with too much sootUrgency medium
Diesel Particulate Filter Restriction - Soot Accumulation (Bank 1)
The diesel particulate filter (DPF) traps soot from diesel engines and burns it off from time to time in a “regeneration”, which needs the exhaust to be very hot. This code means the filter holds more soot than allowed.
What the car has detected
The calculated soot load (from the pressure difference before and after the filter) has gone past the allowed limit.
You can drive carefully, but if the filter keeps filling, the engine computer limits power and a forced regeneration at a garage or even a new filter may be needed. Don't put it off.
Symptoms
- Engine or DPF warning light on
- Loss of power or limp mode
- Higher fuel consumption
- Fan running or high idle after stopping, if it was regenerating
Possible causes
- Filter full because regenerations don't complete (short trips, especially in the cold)
- Heavy workload, for example towing
- Faulty exhaust differential pressure sensor or leaks in its pipes
- Another engine fault (EGR, injectors, turbo) producing more soot than normal
Checks for the garage
- Read the soot load and differential pressure with diagnostics
- Check the exhaust pressure sensor and its pipes
- Look for other codes that explain the extra soot (EGR, injection, turbo)
- Run a forced regeneration with diagnostics if conditions allow
- Inspect the filter if regeneration doesn't lower the load
Next step
Have the filter and the exhaust pressure sensors checked, and a regeneration run with the diagnostic tool if appropriate.
Go to a garage soon: forced regeneration and soot load measurement are done with diagnostics. If power is heavily limited, avoid pushing the engine.
