The essentials.

Typical faults by engine

The period and mileage are those mentioned by each sheet's sources. They are not a maintenance interval and do not predict that any particular car will fail.

According to the data we have, the engine with the fewest documented faults is the 1.6 Diesel (Diesel).

By fuel type, the one with the fewest documented faults is: Diesel.

We only count the sourced sheets we have. An engine with fewer is not guaranteed to be more reliable: it may have been studied less or sold in smaller numbers.

Official recalls: ask before you pay

A recall existing does not mean this car is affected or that it is still outstanding: it depends on the chassis number, the market and the production date.

  1. Ask the seller for the chassis number (VIN): it has 17 characters, appears in the car's documents and can usually also be seen at the base of the windscreen.
  2. Ask an official Alfa Romeo dealer, or the brand's official website if it lets you check by chassis number, whether each recall has been done or is still outstanding for that VIN.
  3. Manufacturer recalls are normally carried out free of charge by the official service network. If one is outstanding, ask for it to be done before you close the sale.

On the test drive: what to look and listen for

Taken from each sheet's symptoms and checks. You can tick off what you have already looked at: it is saved only in this browser.

0 of 6 checked

Engine

  • Look out for: Usually nothing before the failure; in the worst case, engine damage.

Ask them to check: Check campaign F60W by VIN; if the engine knocks, stop and have it inspected.

Electrical and electronic systems

  • Look out for: The lights or hazard warning lights suddenly fail, the power steering or brake assistance is lost.

Ask them to check: Check campaign 6574 by VIN at an Alfa Romeo dealer.

  • Look out for: The battery runs flat and the car will not start; the engine warning light is on and, with the headlamp-off delay active, the lights-on chime sounds when the driver door is opened.

Ask them to check: Tell the garage the battery goes flat for no reason and ask them to check the BCM software level before replacing the battery.

Steering

  • Look out for: After switching the ignition off and on, turning the steering wheel without power assistance turns on the engine warning light and stores code C0529-00; it goes out after turning the wheel from lock to lock.

Ask them to check: The dealer updates the EPS module software (it may need several updates in a row) and recalibrates the steering angle sensor.

High-voltage battery

  • Look out for: Connections of the 12 V positive cable or the high-voltage connector that overheat and can cause a fire, parked or driving; a brake pedal that can collapse and leave no brakes.

Ask them to check: Check both campaigns by VIN.

Lighting

  • Look out for: Condensation or water can be seen inside the tail lamp mounted on the tailgate.

Ask them to check: Show the garage the condensation in the tailgate lamp and ask them to inspect it under warranty as per bulletin 23-029-26.
