Symptoms

No earlier symptoms: the fault only shows if the airbag deploys in a crash, when the inflator can rupture and send metal fragments towards the occupants.

Possible cause described

According to the official notice (Rappel Conso, European alert), the airbag inflator can change its material over time through degradation after long exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures and heat cycles. When it deploys, the excessive internal pressure can rupture the inflator body and metal fragments can pass through the fabric and injure the occupants. Production periods: C3 (A51) from 2 Sept 2009 to 10 Feb 2017; C4 II and DS4 from 29 Sept 2010 to 10 Feb 2017 (and other-market versions from 26 Apr 2012 to 12 Apr 2017); DS3 from 14 Oct 2009 to 9 Feb 2017; DS5 from 21 Nov 2011 to 17 Feb 2017. The notice does not detail the repair or give the number of cars.

This is one of the most serious recalls. Ask Citroën now by VIN whether your car is included and whether the inflator was replaced; if it is included and not done, book it as soon as you can. Do not cover or disable the airbag yourself.
