All-wheel drive unavailable message in mud, sand or off road, with no fault (Mercedes Sprinter 4MATIC)

Sources are not verified in real time and no entry confirms that your car is affected.

Engine / equipment
Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (906 and 907) with 4MATIC all-wheel drive
Period mentioned
2007–2026 (US model years)
Symptoms
When driving in mud, sand or off road, the instrument cluster shows that 4MATIC is unavailable, with no fault codes.
Possible cause described
It is not a fault: the transfer case clutch heats up when a lot of front axle torque is needed for a long time. At about 240 °C the system disconnects to protect itself and comes back when it cools to about 160 °C; the message then disappears (information LI28.00-N-079097).
Check for the garage
Let it cool down: if the message goes away by itself, this is the case.
