A recall does not mean your car is affected. Check the market, build date and VIN with the manufacturer.
- Engine / equipment
- Control unit governing the power windows and sunroof with the digital key: US-market BMW 2 Series Coupé (M2 included), 8 Series and Z4
- Period mentioned
- Model years 2023 (2 Series Coupé, M2 and 8 Series) and 2022–2023 (Z4), US market
- Symptoms
- With the digital key (the phone) out of the car, the windows and sunroof can still be closed.
- Possible cause described
- The control unit software allows the windows and sunroof to be closed when the digital key is no longer in the car, which fails US federal standard FMVSS 118 on power-operated windows. According to NHTSA (recall 23V099, 3,193 cars), closing them unintentionally with someone inside increases the risk of injury; until the software is updated, BMW deactivates the digital key over mobile network and Wi-Fi.
- Check for the garage
- If your car comes from the USA, ask a BMW dealer, with the VIN, whether recall 23V099 is outstanding: they update the control unit software free of charge. Until then, make sure nobody has their hands in the windows or sunroof when closing them.
