ABS/ESP control unit that can stop working from an earth fault (Golf VI, 2017 recall)

Sources are not verified in real time and no entry confirms that your car is affected.

Engine / equipment
VW Golf VI diesel (with other VW models)
Period mentioned
Recall running since February 2017
Symptoms
The ABS and ESP stop working.
Possible cause described
According to the ADAC, a thermomechanical overload in the ABS control unit can cause a faulty earth connection and interrupt the current, and then the ABS/ESP does not work. It is fixed with a software update that detects the broken earth more reliably through a self-test. It is free, takes an hour and covered 288,000 cars in Germany (with other models).
Check for the garage
Ask VW by VIN whether the recall was done. If the ABS or ESP warning light comes on, go to a garage soon: with them off the car still brakes, but without help in a hard stop.
