Symptoms

The gears of the balance shaft module wear out early. The ADAC does not describe visible symptoms.

Possible cause described

According to the ADAC, a plastic deformation of the hub can reduce the bearing clearance of a gear in the module and the gears wear out early. The fix is to replace the whole module as a repair kit: about two hours and free. In Germany it covered 27,300 cars (together with other models; action code 13D8).

Check for the garage

Ask VW by VIN whether the recall was done (action sticker in the spare wheel well and an entry in the service book, code 13D8). It is the same area of the engine as the sheet on the hexagonal oil pump shaft: if you buy a 2.0 TDI of this period, ask the garage to look at it.
