Sticking piston rings, oil consumption and timing chain on the Mitsubishi 1.6 (4A92)Engine
- Engine / equipment
- Mitsubishi 117 hp 1.6 petrol (4A92): Citroën C4 Aircross and Peugeot 4008 (also the Mitsubishi ASX)
- Period mentioned
- 2012–2017
- Symptoms
- Oil has to be topped up between changes; bluish smoke; chain rattle on cold starts.
- Possible cause described
- Russia’s Za Rulem magazine (2021) rates the 4A92 the least successful engine of the range: the piston rings tend to stick from as early as about 80,000 km, which raises oil consumption; the timing chain can stretch beyond 100,000 km, and the engine is very sensitive to the oil level, which should be kept at least halfway up the dipstick.
- Check for the garage
- Measure oil consumption between changes and check the level often; listen for the chain on a cold start; ask for the oil-change history.

Clutch, ABS/ESP module and crankshaft seal on the C-Crosser and 4007Known weak points
- Engine / equipment
- Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007 (Mitsubishi 2.4 petrol and 2.2 HDi)
- Period mentioned
- 2007–2012
- Symptoms
- A failing Teves ABS/ESP module (expensive repair); clutch and dual-mass flywheel failing when towing because 1st and 2nd are tall; a weak battery (warned by a “gong”). On the 2.2 HDi: a crankshaft seal that leaks oil onto the clutch (which slips, also on the DCS gearbox) and the Eolys particulate-filter additive bag exposed next to the rear wishbone.
- Possible cause described
- They are twins of the Mitsubishi Outlander. Cases collected by Honest John; the maker often paid part of the ABS/ESP and clutch repairs.
- Check for the garage
- Check the clutch does not slip; read the ABS/ESP fault memory; test the battery.
