Applies if: Only if fitted with the 7-speed DQ200 DSG. Confirm the gearbox type.

DSG7 gearbox mechatronic unit (DQ200)Gearbox
Engine / equipment
7-speed DQ200 DSG gearbox (dry clutch, 0AM mechatronics), paired with 1.0/1.2/1.4 TSI and 1.6 TDI engines
Period mentioned
2008 onwards
Symptoms
Judder or shudder pulling away in 1st/2nd, reverse won't engage, PRNDS letters flashing or a spanner warning, gearbox stuck in one gear (limp mode).
Possible cause described
Mechatronic unit failure: the pressure accumulator develops fatigue cracks, the electric pump runs constantly and the gearbox loses pressure. The mechatronic's 30 A fuse sometimes blows. Wear of the dry dual clutch is also common.
Check for the garage
Read the gearbox module faults with VCDS, OBDeleven or similar and check the mechatronic fuse.
Cost cited in the source
€350–550 to repair the mechatronic unit alone; €1,000–1,200 including removal and refittingA rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.

1.5 TSI evo cold jerkingEngine management
Engine / equipment
1.5 TSI evo (EA211 evo): Golf VII and VIII, T-Roc, Tiguan, Octavia, Leon, Ibiza, Arona, Karoq, A3…
Period mentioned
2017–2022
Symptoms
Rhythmic jerking (“kangaroo effect”) and hesitation when accelerating at roughly 1,200–2,000 rpm, with a cold engine and in low gears; most noticeable with a manual gearbox.
Possible cause described
An engine management fault during warm-up. Volkswagen released a software update for all group brands in February 2020, which fixed it on most cars; on some it only reduced it. Mechanically it is a reliable engine.
Check for the garage
Test the car from cold in first and second gear, and check at the dealer whether the latest engine control unit software is installed.

Applies if: Only if fitted with the air conditioning system described.

A/C not cooling: N280 valveClimate control
Engine / equipment
Air conditioning with clutchless compressor and N280 regulating valve (combustion VW, Audi, Seat, Cupra and Skoda from 2006)
Period mentioned
2006–2026
Symptoms
The air does not cool or cools intermittently (for example only at motorway speed), and sometimes the compressor rattles with the A/C on. Codes 01232 (N280 valve), P2612 or 00898.
Possible cause described
The compressor regulates its output with the N280 solenoid valve, its most common failure point. Audi issued technical bulletins over a manufacturing fault in this valve on Sanden compressors. Its connector can also become brittle and corrode (especially without the engine undertray), or the wiring fails.
Check for the garage
Read the codes and N280 control current with VCDS or ODIS, measure its resistance (about 10 ohms) and check the connector and wiring before replacing parts. If the valve or compressor is replaced, the whole circuit must be flushed.
Cost cited in the source
N280 valve: a cheap part (about 30 dollars) where sold separately; new compressor with circuit flush: considerably moreA rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.

Applies if: Only all-wheel-drive versions (4Motion, transverse-engine quattro, 4x4 or 4Drive) with a 4th or 5th generation Haldex coupling.

Haldex all-wheel-drive coupling pumpTransmission
Engine / equipment
4th and 5th generation Haldex coupling in transverse-engine VAG all-wheel-drive cars: VW 4Motion, A3/TT/Q3 quattro, Skoda 4x4 and Seat/Cupra 4Drive
Period mentioned
2007–2020
Symptoms
All-wheel-drive warning or a pump error in diagnostics, the car behaves like front-wheel drive (wheelspin in the wet or on gravel) and sometimes no cluster warning even with stored codes.
Possible cause described
The electric pump that pressurises the coupling loses flow because the filter (4th generation) and the pump strainer clog with wear debris; dirty oil raises its current draw and burns it out. According to forum owners, dealer services often change the oil but not the filter or strainer, and a new pump fails again if this is skipped.
Check for the garage
Read the all-wheel-drive module with VCDS, OBDeleven or ODIS (ODIS shows the pump current) and check in the history when the oil was changed and whether the filter was replaced and the strainer cleaned. After servicing, an adaptation with diagnostic equipment is recommended on generations 4 and 5.
Cost cited in the source
Oil, filter and strainer cleaning: maintenance. If the clutch plates are destroyed, an S3 owner quotes about £4,000 to replace the whole unit.A rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.

Applies if: Only EA211 1.0, 1.2 and 1.4 TSI/TFSI engines; the 1.5 TSI evo is not documented in this record's sources.

Water pump and thermostat housing leaks (EA211)Cooling
Engine / equipment
EA211 1.0, 1.2 and 1.4 TSI/TFSI petrol (Golf VII, Polo, Octavia III, Leon 5F, A3 8V, Ibiza, Fabia III and other MQB cars)
Period mentioned
2012–2020
Symptoms
Coolant level drops slowly with no visible puddle, dried white or pink residue behind the engine, a sweet smell and a low-level warning. If loss continues, it can overheat.
Possible cause described
The water pump is built into a plastic housing with the thermostats, which warps and cracks with heat cycles, and its seals degrade. A trade magazine also notes that oil from a nearby leak (for example the crankcase ventilation) speeds up failure of the housing and the pump belt.
Check for the garage
With the engine cold, monitor the level for several days and look for dried residue around the housing and the coolant pipe under the air box. At a garage: pressure test and check for nearby oil leaks. Replacing pump and housing as one assembly is recommended; do not use stop-leak products. Never open the system hot.
Cost cited in the source
A reliability guide quotes €500–1,000 for the 1.4 TSI and €300–600 for the 1.2 TSI.A rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.

Skoda Octavia III: steering warning light, loss of assistance or knocking when turningSteering
Engine / equipment
Skoda Octavia III (5E), all engines
Period mentioned
Built up to June 2015
Symptoms
Yellow steering warning light; partial loss of power assistance with an orange or red light; knocking from the steering rack when turning the wheel.
Possible cause described
According to L'argus, three different faults: with a yellow light (up to June 2015) reprogramming the ECU is enough; with partial loss of assistance and an orange or red light (built up to November 2014) the steering rack is replaced; and the knocking when turning (built up to March 2015) is axial play in the bolted joint between the electric motor and the steering rack, which is also fixed by replacing the rack.
Check for the garage
Tell the garage the colour of the warning light and whether there is knocking. With a red light or if the steering gets heavy, do not keep driving: stop somewhere safe and call for assistance.
