P0087 Fuel rail pressure too low

Urgency high

A code identifies a signal or system that needs to be checked, not a part you should replace.

Fuel Rail/System Pressure - Too Low

On direct injection engines (common rail diesels and many petrol engines), fuel reaches the injectors at very high pressure from a shared pipe, the rail. A sensor measures that pressure and a regulator adjusts it. This code means rail pressure has dropped below the minimum.

What the car has detected

The engine computer has measured a rail fuel pressure below the minimum threshold for the engine's conditions.

With low pressure the engine may lose power, be slow to start or cut out while driving, which is dangerous on the road. Have it checked as soon as possible and avoid long trips.

Symptoms

  • Engine warning light on
  • Loss of power or limp mode
  • Hard or long starting
  • Hesitation or the engine cuts out while driving

Possible causes

  • Clogged fuel filter or bent or squashed lines
  • Weak low-pressure pump in the tank, or its strainer dirty
  • Leaks on the high-pressure side or leaking injectors
  • Rail pressure regulator sticking open or a worn high-pressure pump
  • High-pressure pump out of time or wear of its cam and follower
  • In cold weather, ice from water in the fuel at the tank pick-up strainer

Checks for the garage

  • Read the other codes (for example pump timing ones) and the freeze frame data
  • Compare actual and requested rail pressure in live data, at idle and when accelerating
  • Command the pressure up and down with diagnostics and see whether the sensor follows
  • Check power, earth and wiring of the regulator and the pressure sensor
  • Measure the in-tank pump pressure with a gauge and check filter, lines and leaks

Next step

Make sure there is enough fuel and have the fuel filter, pump and possible leaks checked.

Go to a garage as soon as possible, especially if the engine pulls badly or has ever cut out. Pressure tests need diagnostics and a gauge.

High-pressure pump shedding metal particles on 2.0 TDI common rail: rough running and no startInjection / turbo
Engine / equipment
2.0 TDI common rail (in the US, codes CBEA and CJAA) of the Golf VI and Jetta
Period mentioned
2009–2012 in the US bulletin
Symptoms
Engine warning light, judder or rough running and, in the end, the engine cranks but does not start. Possible codes: P0087 (rail pressure too low), P0088 (too high) or P0191 (rail pressure sensor).
Possible cause described
Volkswagen explains in a US technical bulletin (June 2015) that, if no cause is found after checking everything else, metal particles must be looked for inside the high-pressure pump, by removing the N290 fuel metering valve. The particles come from the pump's internal wear and can reach the rest of the circuit. The bulletin also asks to check the misfuelling guard in the filler neck (so that petrol cannot get in).
Check for the garage
This is garage work: measure the pump's supply pressure, injector leakage and the N276 valve, and only at the end look for particles in the pump. If there are any, the pump usually has to be replaced and whatever received the particles cleaned or replaced.

1.5 dCi pump and injectors with Delphi systemInjection / turbo
Engine / equipment
1.5 dCi (K9K) with early Delphi injection
Period mentioned
Approx. 2001–2011
Symptoms
Injection warning, jerking, rough idle, loss of power, smoke and sometimes a no-start.
Possible cause described
In the early years, the Delphi high-pressure pump can shed metal filings that contaminate the circuit and damage the injectors one after another.
Check for the garage
Read the codes (e.g. P0087, low rail pressure) and look for filings in the diesel filter. If the circuit is contaminated, replace pump, rail and injectors and clean the tank and lines.
Cost cited in the source
Approx. €1,800–3,500 (pump, four injectors, rail and circuit cleaning)A rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.
