Before you buy a used Toyota Proace Max.
Taken only from Testigo's sourced sheets. Use it to question the seller and on the test drive: it does not confirm that any particular car is affected.

The essentials.
- 2 documented, sourced faults across its 2 engines.
- That is not much data: if no other faults show up here, it does not mean it has none.
- They all depend on the equipment or the production date: ask what this car has.
- 3 official recalls on record: ask for the chassis number (VIN) and confirm they have been done.
- According to the data we have, all its engines have the same number of documented faults.
Typical faults by engine
The period and mileage are those mentioned by each sheet's sources. They are not a maintenance interval and do not predict that any particular car will fail.
2.2 D
Diesel
- Period mentioned
- 2006 onwards
- Mileage mentioned
- What the sheet says: According to the UK trade magazine CAT: the crankshaft sensor fails at around 80,000 km; the EGR is better replaced than cleaned; the wiring loom corrodes (2.3); windscreen water gets into the gearbox through a badly routed drain pipe; gearbox oil leaks make the clutch slip; the top strut mounts and steering rack suffer from heavy use.
Applies if: The Proace Max is a Fiat Ducato with the same 2.2 Multijet; the sheet describes the Ducato from 2006, confirm at the garage which points apply to your version.
Proace Max Electric
Electric
- Period mentioned
- 2024–2025
- Mileage mentioned
- The sheet does not mention a mileage.
Applies if: Only the 2024-on version with the 200 kW motor and 110 kWh battery; the recall is for the US Ram ProMaster: confirm by VIN.
Which engine has the fewest documented faults?
| Engine | Documented faults | Recalls |
|---|---|---|
| 2.2 DDiesel | 11 with conditions | 2 |
| Proace Max ElectricElectric | 11 with conditions | 3 |
According to the data we have, all its engines have the same number of documented faults.
We only count the sourced sheets we have. An engine with fewer is not guaranteed to be more reliable: it may have been studied less or sold in smaller numbers.
Official recalls: ask before you pay
A recall existing does not mean this car is affected or that it is still outstanding: it depends on the chassis number, the market and the production date.
- Ask the seller for the chassis number (VIN): it has 17 characters, appears in the car's documents and can usually also be seen at the base of the windscreen.
- Ask an official Toyota dealer, or the brand's official website if it lets you check by chassis number, whether each recall has been done or is still outstanding for that VIN.
- Manufacturer recalls are normally carried out free of charge by the official service network. If one is outstanding, ask for it to be done before you close the sale.

Known weak points
Look out for: The engine cuts out when warm and will not restart until it cools (P0335); hesitation and rough idle from the EGR; code P0482 from corroded wiring; increasingly heavy steering, squeaking strut mounts; brake or reversing lights that fail; a new clutch that slips.
Ask them to check: Read codes (P0335, P0482); check the windscreen drains and gearbox oil; fix leaks before replacing the clutch; check strut mounts and light wiring.
Gearbox
Look out for: Sudden loss of drive; electric-system warnings; knocks or noises from the drive unit under hard acceleration.
Ask them to check: Ask the dealer by VIN whether there is a campaign or update for the drive module; on the test drive, accelerate hard from a standstill and listen for knocks.
