DSG7 gearbox mechatronic unit (DQ200)Gearbox
Engine / equipment
7-speed DQ200 DSG gearbox (dry clutch, 0AM mechatronics), paired with 1.0/1.2/1.4 TSI and 1.6 TDI engines
Period mentioned
2008 onwards
Symptoms
Judder or shudder pulling away in 1st/2nd, reverse won't engage, PRNDS letters flashing or a spanner warning, gearbox stuck in one gear (limp mode).
Possible cause described
Mechatronic unit failure: the pressure accumulator develops fatigue cracks, the electric pump runs constantly and the gearbox loses pressure. The mechatronic's 30 A fuse sometimes blows. Wear of the dry dual clutch is also common.
Check for the garage
Read the gearbox module faults with VCDS, OBDeleven or similar and check the mechatronic fuse.
Cost cited in the source
€350–550 to repair the mechatronic unit alone; €1,000–1,200 including removal and refittingA rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.

Excessive oil consumption (piston rings)Engine
Engine / equipment
1.8 / 2.0 TSI-TFSI EA888, 2nd generation
Period mentioned
Approx. 2009–2015
Symptoms
Very high oil consumption (over 1 litre per 1,000 km), low oil warning, bluish smoke, oil-fouled spark plugs.
Possible cause described
Piston rings that are too thin carbon up and lose tension, letting oil into the combustion chamber. The crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve can also contribute.
Check for the garage
Controlled oil consumption test over 1,000 km, compression or leak-down test and a PCV valve check.
Cost cited in the source
€3,000–5,000 (new pistons and rings)A rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.

Timing chain tensionerTiming system
Engine / equipment
1.8 / 2.0 TSI-TFSI EA888, 1st and 2nd generation
Period mentioned
Approx. 2008–2015
Symptoms
Metallic rattle for a few seconds on a cold start, engine light for camshaft/crankshaft correlation; in the worst case the engine won't start after a loud noise.
Possible cause described
The hydraulic chain tensioner (old design) loses pressure on cold starts, the chain goes slack and can jump teeth, causing valves to hit pistons.
Check for the garage
An inspection plug on the lower timing cover shows the tensioner position. Listen to a cold start.
Cost cited in the source
€1,500–4,000 (chain, guides and tensioner)A rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.

Cracked particulate filter and clogged EGRExhaust and emissions
Engine / equipment
2.0 TDI common rail EA189 with low-pressure EGR, mainly US-market versions (CJAA, CBEA)
Period mentioned
Approx. 2009–2015
Symptoms
Engine light, limp mode with power loss, flashing glow-plug light and black soot inside the tailpipe.
Possible cause described
The diesel particulate filter (DPF) cracks internally and lets soot through, clogging the low-pressure EGR filter behind it.
Check for the garage
Remove the EGR filter and wipe inside the exhaust at that point: if the cloth comes out black, the DPF is cracked. Replace the DPF and EGR filter together.
Cost cited in the source
Approx. €1,000–2,500 (estimate: DPF + EGR filter)A rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.

Cracked EGR coolerCooling / EGR
Engine / equipment
1.6 and 2.0 TDI (EA189 and EA288)
Period mentioned
Approx. 2010–2020
Symptoms
Coolant level drops with no visible leak, white smoke with a sweet smell, rising temperature or engine light. In severe cases the engine hydrolocks.
Possible cause described
The internal tubes of the EGR cooler crack and coolant enters the intake. It worsened after the post-Dieselgate software update, which increased EGR use.
Check for the garage
Cooling system pressure test and check for coolant in the intake or manifold.
Cost cited in the source
€400–1,300A rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.

Period mentioned
2006–2014
Symptoms
Rattle on a cold start, engine light for timing deviation; if the chain jumps, the engine cranks but won't start.
Possible cause described
A narrow chain and a hydraulic tensioner that loses pressure: the chain stretches, often between 60,000 and 100,000 km. VW revised the chain, guides, tensioner and camshaft.
Check for the garage
Listen to a cold start and read the timing deviation values with VCDS. Ask for an invoice showing the revised kit was fitted.

EA888 gen 3 water pump and thermostatCooling
Engine / equipment
1.8 and 2.0 TSI/TFSI EA888 gen 3 (Golf VII GTI/R, A3/S3 8V, TT 8S, A4 B9, Octavia III, Leon III, Passat B8, Tiguan II, Superb III…)
Period mentioned
2012–2020
Symptoms
Slow coolant loss, sweet smell, low-coolant warning and coolant residue under the intake manifold. Overheating is rare unless the level drops a lot.
Possible cause described
The water pump and thermostat form a single plastic module next to the exhaust that cracks with heat cycling. It often fails before 100,000 km and Volkswagen recognises it as a design fault.
Check for the garage
Look for coolant residue where the module meets the block and between pump and thermostat, check the level and pressure-test the system.
Cost cited in the source
Complete pump and thermostat module with coolant: approx. €470–740 at a specialist (converted from Canadian dollars)A rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.

Mileage cited in the database: up to 100,000 km. This is not a maintenance interval and does not predict a failure.

PD TDI camshaft, injectors and cylinder headInjection / cylinder head
Engine / equipment
1.2, 1.4, 1.9 and 2.0 TDI unit-injector (PD) engines, including the VW-sourced 2.0 CRD in Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep
Period mentioned
2000–2010
Symptoms
Growing noise from the cylinder head, power loss and rough running (cams and lifters); unstable idle, smoke or hesitation (injectors); on the 16-valve 2.0 TDI, coolant loss with no visible leak from a cracked head.
Possible cause described
The camshaft also drives the unit injectors and carries a heavy load: without VW 505.01 oil the lobes and lifters wear. 2.0 TDI PD injectors fail frequently. Some 16-valve 2.0 TDI heads (part number ending in A) crack; VW considered it fixed by the end of 2006.
Check for the garage
Check the oil history (VW 505.01), listen to the head, check injector balance rates with a diagnostic tool and, on the 16-valve 2.0 TDI, read the head part number (03G 103 351) and look for coolant loss.
Cost cited in the source
Camshaft and lifters: approx. €400–800; 2.0 TDI PD injectors: €900–2,000A rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.

Mileage cited in the database: 120,000–200,000 km. This is not a maintenance interval and does not predict a failure.

Period mentioned
2019–2023
Symptoms
Usually none. In rare cases, overheating or fire in the engine bay or battery.
Possible cause described
In 2022 the VW Group recalled about 118,000 plug-in hybrids over a high-voltage system fuse that could fail under overvoltage and insufficient insulation; an extra insulating mat is fitted. In 2024 Audi added a recall for 2022–2023 Q5 and A7 plug-in hybrids over battery faults.
Check for the garage
Confirm by VIN at the dealer that the high-voltage system recalls have been done.

1.2 three-cylinder chain and valvesTiming / cylinder head
Engine / equipment
1.2 three-cylinder 6- and 12-valve (AWY, AZQ, BMD, BME, BXV, CGPA): Polo IV and V, Fox, Fabia I and II, Roomster, Ibiza and Córdoba
Period mentioned
2001–2014
Symptoms
Chain noise, rough running, hesitation or intermittent over-fuelling; loss of compression from burnt exhaust valves; in severe cases the chain jumps and bends the valves.
Possible cause described
The timing chain and its hydraulic tensioner are short-lived: they sometimes stretch before 50,000 km and can jump a tooth when the car is parked in gear. Exhaust valves burn and carbon builds up on the valves; the throttle body and crankcase ventilation get dirty.
Check for the garage
Listen for the chain at start-up, measure compression, check the oil change history and whether the chain kit has already been replaced.
Cost cited in the source
Chain kit: approx. €450 (converted from pounds, 2006–2010); new cylinder head: about €2,750 (converted from pounds)A rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.

2.0 TFSI EA113 high-pressure pump followerInjection / high-pressure pump
Engine / equipment
2.0 TFSI EA113 (Golf V GTI, A3/S3 8P, A4 B7, TT 8J, Leon Cupra, Octavia RS, Passat B6, Eos)
Period mentioned
2004–2013
Symptoms
Power loss or hesitation at full load, fuel pressure codes, high-pressure pump noise; fuel smell in the oil and a rising level if the pump leaks; misfires.
Possible cause described
A follower between the camshaft and the high-pressure fuel pump wears through and damages the cam lobe and the pump; Audi hardened the cam in 2006. The pump can leak fuel into the oil. There is also carbon build-up on the intake valves and coil pack failures.
Check for the garage
Check the high-pressure pump follower at every service, smell the oil and watch its level, and read fuel pressure with a diagnostic tool.
Cost cited in the source
Follower: approx. €250–900 depending on damage; far more if the camshaft or pump is damagedA rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.

Mileage cited in the database: from 90,000 km. This is not a maintenance interval and does not predict a failure.

1.5 TSI evo cold jerkingEngine management
Engine / equipment
1.5 TSI evo (EA211 evo): Golf VII and VIII, T-Roc, Tiguan, Octavia, Leon, Ibiza, Arona, Karoq, A3…
Period mentioned
2017–2022
Symptoms
Rhythmic jerking (“kangaroo effect”) and hesitation when accelerating at roughly 1,200–2,000 rpm, with a cold engine and in low gears; most noticeable with a manual gearbox.
Possible cause described
An engine management fault during warm-up. Volkswagen released a software update for all group brands in February 2020, which fixed it on most cars; on some it only reduced it. Mechanically it is a reliable engine.
Check for the garage
Test the car from cold in first and second gear, and check at the dealer whether the latest engine control unit software is installed.
Cost cited in the source
Software update: €0–150A rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.

DQ250 DSG mechatronic and oilDSG gearbox
Engine / equipment
DQ250 6-speed wet-clutch DSG (2.0 TDI, 2.0 TSI and other powerful engines in the Golf, Passat, Tiguan, A3, TT, Octavia, Superb, Leon…)
Period mentioned
2003–2020
Symptoms
Jerking or shudder when pulling away and at low speed, harsh shifts, gearbox warning or limp mode; codes P17BF, P189C, P0841, P0871 or P0717.
Possible cause described
In most cases the cause is the mechatronic unit (the electro-hydraulic control unit), not the clutches. The oil shares a circuit with the clutches and degrades, carrying debris that damages the valves; the pan can also rust and leak. Volkswagen specifies an oil and filter change every 60,000 km.
Check for the garage
Read codes with ODIS or VCDS, check the oil change history, inspect the pan for rust or leaks and the clutch adaptation values. Replacing the mechatronic control board is often enough.
Cost cited in the source
Oil and filter change: maintenance every 60,000 km; control board or mechatronic: expensive repairA rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.

Mileage cited in the database: from 60,000 km. This is not a maintenance interval and does not predict a failure.

A/C not cooling: N280 valveClimate control
Engine / equipment
Air conditioning with clutchless compressor and N280 regulating valve (combustion VW, Audi, Seat, Cupra and Skoda from 2006)
Period mentioned
2006–2026
Symptoms
The air does not cool or cools intermittently (for example only at motorway speed), and sometimes the compressor rattles with the A/C on. Codes 01232 (N280 valve), P2612 or 00898.
Possible cause described
The compressor regulates its output with the N280 solenoid valve, its most common failure point. Audi issued technical bulletins over a manufacturing fault in this valve on Sanden compressors. Its connector can also become brittle and corrode (especially without the engine undertray), or the wiring fails.
Check for the garage
Read the codes and N280 control current with VCDS or ODIS, measure its resistance (about 10 ohms) and check the connector and wiring before replacing parts. If the valve or compressor is replaced, the whole circuit must be flushed.
Cost cited in the source
N280 valve: a cheap part (about 30 dollars) where sold separately; new compressor with circuit flush: considerably moreA rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.
