EA888 gen 3 water pump and thermostatCooling
- Engine / equipment
- 1.8 and 2.0 TSI/TFSI EA888 gen 3 (Golf VII GTI/R, A3/S3 8V, TT 8S, A4 B9, Octavia III, Leon III, Passat B8, Tiguan II, Superb III…)
- Period mentioned
- 2012–2020
- Symptoms
- Slow coolant loss, sweet smell, low-coolant warning and coolant residue under the intake manifold. Overheating is rare unless the level drops a lot.
- Possible cause described
- The water pump and thermostat form a single plastic module next to the exhaust that cracks with heat cycling. It often fails before 100,000 km and Volkswagen recognises it as a design fault.
- Check for the garage
- Look for coolant residue where the module meets the block and between pump and thermostat, check the level and pressure-test the system.
- Cost cited in the source
- Complete pump and thermostat module with coolant: approx. €470–740 at a specialist (converted from Canadian dollars)A rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.
Mileage cited in the database: up to 100,000 km. This is not a maintenance interval and does not predict a failure.

Applies if: Only if fitted with the 6-speed DQ250 DSG. Confirm the gearbox type.
DQ250 DSG mechatronic and oilDSG gearbox
- Engine / equipment
- DQ250 6-speed wet-clutch DSG (2.0 TDI, 2.0 TSI and other powerful engines in the Golf, Passat, Tiguan, A3, TT, Octavia, Superb, Leon…)
- Period mentioned
- 2003–2020
- Symptoms
- Jerking or shudder when pulling away and at low speed, harsh shifts, gearbox warning or limp mode; codes P17BF, P189C, P0841, P0871 or P0717.
- Possible cause described
- In most cases the cause is the mechatronic unit (the electro-hydraulic control unit), not the clutches. The oil shares a circuit with the clutches and degrades, carrying debris that damages the valves; the pan can also rust and leak. Volkswagen specifies an oil and filter change every 60,000 km.
- Check for the garage
- Read codes with ODIS or VCDS, check the oil change history, inspect the pan for rust or leaks and the clutch adaptation values. Replacing the mechatronic control board is often enough.
- Cost cited in the source
- Oil and filter change: maintenance every 60,000 km; control board or mechatronic: expensive repairA rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.
Mileage cited in the database: from 60,000 km. This is not a maintenance interval and does not predict a failure.

Applies if: Only if fitted with the air conditioning system described.
A/C not cooling: N280 valveClimate control
- Engine / equipment
- Air conditioning with clutchless compressor and N280 regulating valve (combustion VW, Audi, Seat, Cupra and Skoda from 2006)
- Period mentioned
- 2006–2026
- Symptoms
- The air does not cool or cools intermittently (for example only at motorway speed), and sometimes the compressor rattles with the A/C on. Codes 01232 (N280 valve), P2612 or 00898.
- Possible cause described
- The compressor regulates its output with the N280 solenoid valve, its most common failure point. Audi issued technical bulletins over a manufacturing fault in this valve on Sanden compressors. Its connector can also become brittle and corrode (especially without the engine undertray), or the wiring fails.
- Check for the garage
- Read the codes and N280 control current with VCDS or ODIS, measure its resistance (about 10 ohms) and check the connector and wiring before replacing parts. If the valve or compressor is replaced, the whole circuit must be flushed.
- Cost cited in the source
- N280 valve: a cheap part (about 30 dollars) where sold separately; new compressor with circuit flush: considerably moreA rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.

Applies if: Only those sold until week 29 of 2020 (July); later cars already have the new software.
Slow screen, reversing camera and parking aid that fail and strange messages on the first Golf VIIIElectrical and electronic systems
- Engine / equipment
- Golf VIII, all versions sold until July 2020
- Period mentioned
- 2019–2020
- Symptoms
- The central screen reacts late to touch; the reversing camera or the parking aid does not always work; messages appear that make no sense, such as “Function not available. Please wait”.
- Possible cause described
- AUTO BILD reports that the first 56,000 Golf VIII sold, from the launch in late summer 2019 to week 29 of 2020, had software with a slow infotainment, some unreliable assistance systems (reversing camera and parking aid) and error messages that pop up without explanation. Volkswagen fixes it with a voluntary service action; cars sold later already have the new software.
- Check for the garage
- Ask the Volkswagen dealer, with the VIN, whether the service action has been done. If not, the software update is installed at the workshop (one day, with a courtesy car). If the fault remains afterwards, read the faults with diagnostic equipment.
- Cost cited in the source
- Free: it is a manufacturer service action.A rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.

"Travel Assist not available" messages caused by the steering wheel hands-on detection mat (Golf, Tiguan and Arteon)Driver assistance
- Engine / equipment
- Volkswagen Golf GTI and R, Tiguan and Arteon 2.0 TSI with a hands-on detection steering wheel
- Period mentioned
- 2022–2024 (US model years)
- Symptoms
- Several assist systems do not work or cannot be switched on, with the messages "Travel Assist currently not available" or "Emergency Assist limited availability".
- Possible cause described
- A manufacturing deviation in the steering wheel hands-on detection mat and in the software of its control unit (J1158). Volkswagen describes it in bulletin 48-23-01.
- Check for the garage
- Describe the messages to the garage and ask them to check the steering wheel hands-on detection mat and its control unit software as per bulletin 48-23-01.
- Cost cited in the source
- No verified estimate; ask the garage for a quote.A rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.

Assist systems that switch off for a while with a fogged or dirty front camera (Golf and Tiguan): not a faultDriver assistance
- Engine / equipment
- Volkswagen Golf GTI and R and Tiguan 2.0 TSI
- Period mentioned
- Golf 2026–2027 and Tiguan 2025–2027 (US model years)
- Symptoms
- Front Assist, traffic sign recognition or Travel Assist are limited or unavailable for a while and then come back; the garage cannot reproduce it.
- Possible cause described
- The front camera view is briefly blocked (fogged windscreen, dirt, bad weather or poor light) and the assist systems switch off; Volkswagen says it is not a system fault and that U112200 entries may be stored in the adaptive cruise control unit (bulletin 91-26-05).
- Check for the garage
- Keep the windscreen area in front of the camera clean and demisted; if the assist systems come back by themselves, no parts need replacing.
- Cost cited in the source
- No verified estimate; ask the garage for a quote.A rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.
