V6 TDI rear chains, intake flaps and leaksTiming / intake / leaks
- Engine / equipment
- 2.7 and 3.0 TDI V6 (EA896 and EA897): Audi A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, Q5, Q7; VW Touareg, Phaeton and Amarok; Porsche Cayenne, Macan and Panamera
- Period mentioned
- 2004–2018
- Symptoms
- Chain rattle for the first seconds after a cold start; power loss or limp mode from the intake flaps; coolant or oil loss in the engine V; EGR faults with rough idle.
- Possible cause described
- The timing chains sit at the rear of the engine, against the bulkhead, and their tensioners lose pressure. The intake flaps use plastic linkage rods that wear. The coolant valve, oil cooler gasket and EGR are packed into the engine V and leak with age.
- Check for the garage
- Listen to a cold start (a rattle lasting more than 2–3 seconds is a bad sign), check flap operation with a diagnostic tool, look for leaks in the engine V and check the oil change history.
- Cost cited in the source
- Tensioners and chains: approx. €2,000–4,500; EGR with cooler: €1,000–1,500; oil cooler gasket: €300–600A rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.

View full entryIMS intermediate shaft bearingEngine (intermediate shaft bearing)
- Engine / equipment
- M96 and M97 in the 911 996 and 997 (Carrera, not Turbo or GT3), Boxster 986 and 987 and Cayman 987
- Period mentioned
- 1997–2008 (highest risk 2000–2005)
- Symptoms
- Often none before it breaks. Sometimes noise or knocking and metal particles in the oil filter. When it fails it usually destroys the engine.
- Possible cause described
- The sealed intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing breaks. The single-row bearing, used mostly in 2000–2005, had warranty failure rates of up to 8–10%, against about 1% for the dual-row bearing. From late 2005 a larger bearing is used that cannot be changed without opening the engine. Turbo and GT3 models use a different engine without this problem.
- Check for the garage
- Identify the bearing type by year and engine, check the oil filter for metal particles and confirm whether a replacement bearing has already been fitted.
- Cost cited in the source
- Preventive replacement bearing (engines up to 2005): far cheaper than an engine; if it fails, the engine usually has to be replaced or rebuiltA rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.

View full entryMetallic creak at the rear from the rear shock absorber top mountSuspension and steering
- Engine / equipment
- 911 (991) Carrera, Targa and Turbo
- Period mentioned
- 2017–2018
- Symptoms
- A metallic creak around the top of the rear wheel when going over speed bumps or potholes.
- Possible cause described
- The rear coil spring force may be out of tolerance; the side load overloads the insert in the shock absorber top mount and the piston rod rubs against the mount housing. Porsche describes it in technical information 142/17 (February 2018): if there is already damage, the rear inserts, top mounts and coil springs are replaced in pairs, and the shock absorbers depending on mileage.
- Check for the garage
- Note when it creaks (speed bumps, potholes, turning). At the garage, have them remove and inspect the rear spring and shock absorber assembly (insert, top mount, spring and shock absorber) before looking at other parts.

- Engine / equipment
- Panamera 4S (971) 2.9 V6 biturbo
- Period mentioned
- 2017–2018
- Symptoms
- Coolant loss: a stain under the engine, a smell of hot coolant and, if not noticed in time, the temperature and coolant level warning lights on at the same time.
- Possible cause described
- The coolant pipe joining the engine block to the left cylinder head (cylinders 4 to 6) can crack over time because of vibrations in the cooling system. Porsche replaces it with an improved pipe in service campaign WJ26 (technical information 45/18, October 2018).
- Check for the garage
- With the temperature warning light on, stop in a safe place and do not drive on; do not open the reservoir when hot. At the garage, have them check the pipe between the block and the left cylinder head and whether the car has campaign WJ26 outstanding.
