Engines: 1.33 / 1.4 / 1.6 VVT-i (Petrol)

Applies if: Only the 1.33 Dual VVT-i (1NR-FE).

Oil consumption on the 1.33 Dual VVT-i (1NR-FE)Engine
Engine / equipment
1.33 Dual VVT-i (1NR-FE): Yaris, iQ, Urban Cruiser, Auris and Verso-S
Period mentioned
Approx. 2008–2013
Symptoms
The oil level drops between services (more than half a litre per 1,000 km and up to a litre or more), usually from 150,000–200,000 km; bluish smoke.
Possible cause described
Owner forums blame low-friction piston rings that do not scrape the oil well; the fix was revised pistons and rings. The German Yaris II guide says it was only fully fixed in the next model.
Check for the garage
Check the history for oil top-ups or replaced pistons; measure consumption between two changes and check the spark plugs.

Engines: 1.8 Hybrid (Hybrid)

Clogged EGR and head gasket on the 1.8 hybrid (2ZR-FXE)Engine
Engine / equipment
1.8 hybrid (2ZR-FXE): Prius III, Prius+ and Auris hybrid
Period mentioned
Approx. 2010–2015
Symptoms
Knocking or rattling on cold start, misfires (P0301–P0304), coolant loss and, eventually, a damaged head gasket.
Possible cause described
The EGR cooler and passages clog with soot; uneven gas distribution causes knock and misfires that end up damaging the head gasket. Toyota issued a technical bulletin (T-SB-0116-15) for the 2010–2015 Prius.
Check for the garage
Read the misfire codes, watch the coolant level and clean the EGR cooler, valve and manifold preventively; if coolant is lost with no visible leak, run a combustion-gas test.

Engines: 1.8 Hybrid (Hybrid)

Applies if: The Toyota USA bulletin does not list this model, but its hybrid battery is also cooled with cabin air through a filter.

Clogged hybrid battery cooling fan and filterHigh-voltage battery
Engine / equipment
Hybrid battery cooled with cabin air (intake next to the rear seat): Prius, Yaris, Auris, Corolla, C-HR, RAV4, Camry and others
Period mentioned
2003 onwards
Symptoms
Hybrid battery cooling maintenance message, warning light with codes P0A80 or P0A7F, a noisy fan and less electric assistance; if ignored, the battery ages faster.
Possible cause described
Dust, pet hair or dirt block the filter and fan that cool the battery; so do objects covering the intake. Toyota USA issued bulletin T-SB-0074-20 (2003–2020 Prius and Camry, Corolla, Highlander, RAV4 and Mirai hybrids up to 2020) and recommends cleaning the filter every 5,000 miles (about 8,000 km).
Check for the garage
Clean or replace the filter and clean the fan before condemning the battery; keep the intake grille clear. At the garage, read the codes and, if needed, install the software Toyota specifies.

Engines: 1.4 D-4D (Diesel)

Injectors, dual-mass flywheel and oil consumption on the 1.4 D-4D (1ND-TV)Injection / turbo
Engine / equipment
1.4 D-4D (1ND-TV): Yaris, Yaris Verso, iQ, Urban Cruiser, Corolla, Auris and Verso-S
Period mentioned
Approx. 2001–2018
Symptoms
Hard starting, rough idle, smoke and loss of power; noise or vibration from the flywheel when starting and releasing the clutch; oil consumption.
Possible cause described
Soot builds up in the injectors and EGR valve, especially with many short trips. The dual-mass flywheel wears and, in the worst case, damages the gearbox. Failures of the rail pressure regulator and oil consumption through the turbo or crankcase ventilation are also reported.
Check for the garage
Read the codes, run an injector back-leak test and check the EGR. Listen to the flywheel at idle with the clutch released. Measure oil consumption.
Cost cited in the source
Approx. €1,000–1,600 for dual-mass flywheel and clutch (German guide).A rough figure from the original database, not an up-to-date quote.

Engines: 2.0 / 2.2 D-4D (Diesel)

Oil consumption and head gasket on the 2.0 and 2.2 D-4DEngine
Engine / equipment
2.0 D-4D (1AD) and 2.2 D-4D (2AD)
Period mentioned
2005–2009
Symptoms
High oil consumption, coolant loss, overheating, smoke and clogged EGR and particulate filter.
Possible cause described
Carbon on the pistons causing oil consumption and head-gasket failures. Toyota had out-of-warranty support guidelines for engines built in 2005–2009 (up to 7 years and 180,000 km), now expired.
Check for the garage
Measure oil consumption, run a combustion-gas test on the coolant and check the EGR and particulate filter; check the engine repair history.
