OBD2 CODE

P0304 Misfire in cylinder 4

Urgency high

A code identifies a signal or system that needs to be checked, not a part you should replace.

Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected

The air and fuel mixture is not burning properly in cylinder 4. The engine computer notices because the crankshaft (the shaft the pistons turn) slows down for an instant every time that cylinder misfires. The last digit of the code is the cylinder number.

What the car has detected

The engine computer has counted more failed combustions in cylinder 4 than it allows for the current load and engine speed. It measures this from changes in crankshaft speed.

If the misfire continues, unburnt fuel reaches the catalytic converter and can damage it. If the engine warning light is flashing, the misfire is severe: drive as little as possible and get it to a garage as soon as you can.

Symptoms

  • Engine warning light on or flashing
  • Rough idle or a shaking engine
  • Hesitation and loss of power when accelerating
  • Hard starting
  • Higher fuel consumption
  • Smell of unburnt fuel from the exhaust

Possible causes

  • Worn or dirty spark plug (the part that makes the spark)
  • Faulty ignition coil or spark plug lead
  • Cylinder 4 injector dirty, leaking or with an electrical fault
  • Air leak near cylinder 4 (intake hose or gasket)
  • Low compression: valves, piston rings or head gasket
  • Timing out of adjustment or a faulty crankshaft or camshaft sensor

Checks for the garage

  • Read all the codes and the freeze frame data before clearing anything
  • Check battery and charging voltage: low voltage upsets ignition and injectors
  • Check the cylinder 4 spark plug, coil and wiring; move the coil to another cylinder and see whether the misfire follows it
  • Test the cylinder 4 injector and the fuel pressure
  • Do a compression test on cylinder 4
  • Look for air leaks and intermittent breaks in the wiring

Next step

Avoid hard acceleration and long trips, and have the spark plug, coil, injector and compression of cylinder 4 checked.

Go to a garage if the warning light is flashing, if the engine shakes a lot or loses power, or if the code comes back after replacing the spark plug or coil. Compression and injector tests need workshop tools.

Naturally aspirated 1.0, 1.2 and 1.4 Ecotec (Z10XEP, Z12XEP, Z14XEP, A12XER, A14XER): Corsa C, D and E, Adam, Astra H and J, Meriva A and B, Tigra TwinTop
Period mentioned
2003–2019
Symptoms
Engine rattle, especially on start-up, power loss and misfires (P0300 to P0304).
Possible cause described
The timing chain stretches on these naturally aspirated engines. On the 2004–2010 Astra H the same symptoms can come from camshaft bearing blocks tightened to too low a torque at the factory; cars already corrected have a yellow mark on the timing cover.
Check for the garage
Listen to a cold start, read misfire codes, look for the yellow mark on the timing cover (Astra H) and check chain stretch.

Misfires on one cylinder bank only caused by loose ignition coil ground connectionsEngine management
Engine / equipment
Petrol V6 and V8 in the Quattroporte (VI), Ghibli and Levante
Period mentioned
2013–2024
Symptoms
Engine warning light on and shaking at idle, with misfires only on the cylinders on one side of the engine (for example 1, 3 and 5).
Possible cause described
The ground connections of that bank's ignition coils are not tightened properly. Maserati explains it in diagnostic sheet DS 25-25 (July 2025): on the V6 the grounds are on the cylinder head covers and are tightened to 10 Nm; on the V8, near the oil filter support.
Check for the garage
Note which cylinders the reader shows. If they are all on the same side, ask the garage to check the tightness of the coil grounds before replacing spark plugs, coils or injectors.

Clogged EGR and head gasket on the 1.8 hybrid (2ZR-FXE)Engine
Engine / equipment
1.8 hybrid (2ZR-FXE): Prius III, Prius+ and Auris hybrid
Period mentioned
Approx. 2010–2015
Symptoms
Knocking or rattling on cold start, misfires (P0301–P0304), coolant loss and, eventually, a damaged head gasket.
Possible cause described
The EGR cooler and passages clog with soot; uneven gas distribution causes knock and misfires that end up damaging the head gasket. Toyota issued a technical bulletin (T-SB-0116-15) for the 2010–2015 Prius.
Check for the garage
Read the misfire codes, watch the coolant level and clean the EGR cooler, valve and manifold preventively; if coolant is lost with no visible leak, run a combustion-gas test.
